BottleRock Presents Cheech & Chong With Shelby Chong @ The Uptown | Brought to you by the producers of the Bottlerock Music Festival! Successful beyond their wildest dreams, the iconic comedy duo Cheech & Chong defined an era with their hilariously irreverent, satirical, counter-culture, no-holds-barred comedy routines. Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong’s phenomenal success began on the stand up comedy circuit which led to 9 hit comedy albums and 8 hit films, breaking box office records, shattering comedy album sales, garnering multiple Grammy nominations and mesmerizing fans for more than a decade.

With nine albums released from 1972 through 1985, Cheech and Chong were nominated for four Grammy Awards, winning the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album with their third album, Los Cochinos, released in 1973. Big Bambu, their second album, was the biggest selling comedy record of all time in 1972 and remained so for many years. Their stunningly successful comedy streak transitioned to film in 1978 with their first movie, “Up In Smoke,” the highest grossing comedy of 1978, topping $100 million at the box office. Cheech and Chong co-wrote and starred in a total of eight feature films together, all directed by Chong.

Bottlerock Presents Rodrigo y Gabriela @ Th Uptown | Brought to you by the producers of the Bottlerock, internationally acclaimed Mexican acoustic rock guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela will be bringing their unique instrumental blend of metal, jazz and world music to the Uptown audience. Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero have been playing together for more than fifteen years. First as young thrash metal fans in their native Mexico City, then as innocents abroad and street musicians in Dublin, Ireland at the turn of the millennium, and finally as the globe-straddling, film-scoring, record-breaking artists they are today.

Known for exhilarating live shows, Rodrigo y Gabriela have won the hearts of music lovers from the haciendas of Cuba to the Hollywood Bowl and festival fields of Europe, as they continue to weave their unique six-string magic. The extraordinary interplay between Sanchez’s fiery lead lines and Quintero’s phenomenal rhythmic battery is truly universal. The duo has reloaded their arsenal following the April 2014 worldwide release of 9 Dead Alive, their first studio album in five years. The new songs are intimate, the playing intuitive, and the results are spectacular, bursting with melodic energy and rhythmic invention. Recorded at their Pacific Coast hideaway in late summer, the album captures the warmth and spontaneity of two great musicians riffing and jamming together, perfectly distilled into 9 new songs teeming with desire, elegance and gusto.

With career sales in excess of 1.5 million albums, blockbuster movie scores, and sold out tours worldwide, Rodrigo y Gabriela have certainly made their mark. Their appeal is boundless, their scope limitless, and the music timeless; clearly, we have only begun to see what this duo is capable of.

Wednesday Night Ramble: Terry Hanck @ Historic Empress Theatre | The North Bay All-Stars host a gathering of musical friends in the latest edition of The Wednesday Night Ramble at the historic Empress Theatre in downtown Vallejo. The All-Stars are Don Bassey on bass and vocals, Mike Emerson on keyboards, T Moran on drums, and Matt Silva on guitar. Soul-rockin' Bluesman Terry Hanck brings his smokin' sax and vocals to the Empress for this version of the Ramble.

Blues and roots fans know that the soundtrack to early rock' n' roll ran on three-minute instrumentals with sax in the lead, and was directly related to 1950s and 1960s New Orleans R&B hits, along with that deep-fried wildness that came from Memphis. With this history lesson, old school rock 'n' soul saxophonist and singer Terry Hanck makes perfect sense. Clearly, Hanck has worshipped at the right Southern altars--those of such iconic R&B brothers as Fats Domino, Ray Charles, B. B. King, Lee Allen and King Curtis. "I write songs that you think you've heard for years," says the South Florida-based Hanck, who's got suave movie-star looks and a good time presence that immutably anchors the old-style R&B he adores. His level of expertise on this, his 6th album, makes for an unbeatable workout on his debut for Delta Groove, LOOK OUT!

As Living Blues writer Lee Hildebrand testified, "Hanck is one of the most formidable saxophonists in the blues and soul business. He has a virile tone and attack and an uncanny command of upper-register notes." But, whether it is a joyous jump blues romp or a steamy slow dance of a stroll--this is the kind of music that has mattered to the tall tenor man all his life...

Napa City Nights Featuring Girls & Boys, The Grain Band and Jessica Martindale @ Veterans Memorial Park Amphitheater |
A Napa Valley Summer Tradition is back for 2016! Grab your blanket and picnic basket and head downtown this Friday for the kick off of the Napa Valley's best Summer concert series. This week's artists:

Girls & Boys

Girls & Boys delivers a sound ranging from rock and pop to soulful and moody. The band always delivers a powerful performance with a chemistry that is undeniable both on and off the stage. From Santa Rosa, California who are quickly on the rise at some of the top venues in California including the Bottle Rock Fest in Napa, Great American Music Hall, Mountain Winery in Saratoga, The Mint LA, Mystic Theater, Vina Robles Amphitheater, and The Sweetwater Music Hall to name a few, and to be recipients of the Bay Area's Bohemian Best Indie Band in 2012. The band's members consist of Brianna Lee Vocals - Guitar - Keys, Josh Barrett Bass, Mark Tarlton Drums, Nick Simmons Guitar and Ross Barbieri Guitar - Vocals. Led by the soulful vocals of front-woman Brianna Lee, the band's dynamics back up her every move with power and grace making for a captivating live show.

Since the release of their debut album in 2012 people near and far have been taking notice of Girls & Boys. The album's strong sonic quality and songwriting landed placements of four of their songs in Film and TV including 2013's "Divorce Invitation" and the Showtime Reality series "The Real L Word".

The Grain Band

A mainstay of the Petaluma Rock scene, The Grain has gained notoriety with local music lovers who flock to Sonoma County's best venues to get down with P-Town's most powerful quartet. Guitarist and songwriter, Pete Delaney, has played his special blend of Rock and Blues up and down the West Coast for over two decades. He is backed by the one and only Graham Stearns on bass, guitarist extraordinaire, Erik Stieg, and the funky drummer, Sean England. The Grain's music consists of a balance of well crafted original songs and classic cover tunes that often lead into extended solos and jams creating a musical environment that engages both the mind and body.

Jessica Martindale

More than a songwriter. There is courage in her pulse. An aching wisdom in her voice. A woman whose music has the stripped down, real-deal beauty that comes from risking everything. Not bowing even to the indie idol of irony, her crisp, sultry voice answers only to honesty, and is its own license to croon. Her songs spring from an undeniable passion, in the old-school, sweating-blood sense of the word.

Napa City Nights

In the heart of downtown Napa is the renovated Veterans Memorial Park Amphitheater. Construction was completed in May 2008 as part of the Napa River Walk & flood control project. With Terraced seating areas, elegant lighting and beautiful views of the Napa River, the park is a unique venue for watching talented musicians and performers. Musical genres include Jazz, Rock, Country, World, Blues, Pop and Folk.

The Amphitheater is located along the Napa Riverwalk Promenade and is within easy walking distance from world class restaurants and distinctive shops. Even though the lead voices did not sound exactly like Frey and Henley, they were very strong and the background vocals and harmonies were indistinguishable from the Eagles themselves. Musicianship was outstanding all around.”

“The group sounded even better than the Eagles and each individual musician was very gifted on the guitar, keyboard, harmonica and other string instruments as well as an awesome drummer. the voices harmonized with perfection.”

“What an awesome group of guys! As my husband put it, ‘I would not have changed a thing!'”

HOTEL CALIFORNIA has become one of the most sought after acts in the world, with name recognition and true marquis value paralleling today’s modern recording artists. Napa City Nights Featuring Forejour, The Deadlies and Francessa Lee @ Veterans Memorial Park Amphitheater |

A Napa Valley Summer Tradition is back for 2016! Grab your blanket and picnic basket and head downtown this Friday for the kick off of the Napa Valley's best Summer concert series.

This week's artists:

Forejour

FOREJOUR pays tribute to the music of 80’s mega bands FOREIGNER & JOURNEY, recreating the soundtrack of a generation with stunning accuracy. Forejour’s set list includes the 20th century’s most down-loaded song, “Don’t Stop Believing”, as well as power ballads such as Foreigner’s “I Want To Know What Love Is”, and Journey’s “Faithfully”.

The Deadlies

The Deadlies bring a bright blast of sound evolving from the California surf scene and roadhouse honkytonks, and swing with free-wheelin’ references of the best of punk & rock – raw, real and FUN! The band features entertaining vocalist and rippin’ guitarist, James Patrick Regan, Napa Valley’s KVYN 99.3 FM “Good Morning, Bob!” radio host Bob St. Laurent grooving the bass! The two and their drummer rebrand the power-trio sound and are loaded for bear with chops and hooks making them the Deadli-est of Surf bands.

Francessa Lee

Confiding narratives and striking melodies illustrate the songs of Francesca Lee. Layered and lustrous, the music on her new full-length release, The Pieces Left, radiates from an organic center colored by electronic shadings and beats. As sonic light breaks through the opaque mist of a dense soundscape, the sound mirrors the drama of her locale: San Francisco, home to generations of visionaries. “Nothing is more dreamlike than the adventure of walking in this city,” she says. “I look out my window to see people in the street, a bus moving, a couple fighting on the corner, a homeless man. The inspiration for the album comes from what I visualize everyday.”

Nashville's Sean McConnell w/special guest Andy Davis @ Silo's | “From a very young age, I just knew that I was gonna spend my life making music,” Sean McConnell states. “I never really questioned it, so I just forged ahead and didn’t let anything stop me.”

Although his self-titled new Rounder album will serve as his introduction to many listeners, the personable young artist is actually a seasoned, distinctive songwriter and an experienced performer with a quartet of D.I.Y. indie releases to his credit. Having built a substantial grass-roots fan base through tireless touring and old-fashioned hard work, McConnell is primed for a mainstream breakthrough.

Sean McConnell demonstrates exactly why McConnell has already won such a devoted audience. He writes vivid, forthright, effortlessly catchy songs whose incisive melodic craft is matched by their resonant emotional insight. Such instantly memorable tunes as “Holy Days,” “Beautiful Rose,” “Bottom of the Sea” and “Best We’ve Ever Been” are both catchy and personally charged, conveying an unmistakable sense of personal experience while exploring universal truths.

“This record’s a bit of a step for me,” McConnell asserts. “It’s a real storyteller record, and it’s pretty autobiographical. I’m learning how to be more honest and understated in my writing, and I wanted to match that sonically and vocally. When I look at this collection of songs, I see a lot of nostalgia, and looking back on sacred moments. I’m kind of nostalgic and reflective by nature.”

McConnell recorded the album in his adopted hometown of Nashville with producers Jason Lehning and Ian Fitchuk, who also contributed keyboards and drums, respectively. The recording took place prior to McConnell signing with Rounder, with the artist financing the sessions himself.

“This project started,” he explains, “when I went to a cabin by myself for a week, with the intention of writing some songs. In that week, I wrote about half of the songs on the record, and I could see the thread of what this record was gonna be. That was exciting for me, because it normally takes me a year to find an album’s worth of songs that belong together. The whole recording process was really fun and liberating, and the energy in the studio was really positive.”

Songwriting and music-making have been a part of Sean McConnell’s life for as long as he can remember. “My mom was a singer and my dad was a guitar player and songwriter,” he notes. “They’d play in coffeehouses and I’d go along and watch them perform, and seeing that lifestyle showed me that music was an option. And seeing my dad painstakingly writing songs had a huge influence on me, and gave me license to feel like I could enter into that world.”

By the age of ten, he had become proficient on guitar and was writing his first songs. “I fell in love with the instrument first,” McConnell recalls. “Learning guitar gave me a feeling of uncharted territory laid out in front of me. And as I got better on guitar, the songs started to come naturally. At around the same time, we moved from Massachusetts to Georgia, and the first song I wrote was about the feeling of leaving the familiar and feeling lost in a new place. Music gave me a focus and became an emotional outlet for me.”

His supportive family background helped to instill the confidence and drive to pursue his muse early on. “I started playing in middle school, doing any gig I could get just to get my chops up,” he says. “By high school, I would be doing local gigs and really promoting them, bringing out a couple hundred kids to my shows a few times a month and starting to make a decent living at it. That made me think that maybe I could do this in other towns. So I started traveling around the southeast a little bit, and there was always enough progress to take things to the next level. While I was in college, I did a lot of college touring, just me driving all over the United States in a Toyota Corolla. It was hard work, but it showed me that I could do it.”

McConnell was just 15 when he self-released his first album, Faces, in 2000. Followed by 2001’s Here In The Lost and Found, 2004’s 200 Orange Street, 2006’s Cold Black Sky, 2007’s Tell The Truth, 2008’s The Walk Around EP, 2010’s Saints, Thieves and Liars, 2012’s Midland and the 2014 EP The B Side Session.

Having spent much of his life honing his craft and paying his dues, Sean McConnell is eager to launch the next chapter of his career.

“I kind of feel like I’ve been in a really long boot camp,” he concludes. “I’m really grateful for that, because I feel like I’ve gained enough experience to know the deal and be prepared for anything. I’m excited to see where the next part of the journey takes me.”

Ani Difranco @ Uptown Theatre | As a singer, songwriter, activist and independent entrepreneur, Ani DiFranco has been setting her own pace—and encouraging countless admirers to do the same—for more than 20 years. But while she has been known as the “Little Folksinger,” her music has grown far beyond her acoustic solo roots in cozy venues to embrace jazz, soul, electronica and even more distant sounds. All of which are featured in DiFranco’s new Righteous Babe release, Allergic To Water, where she also blends abstract imagery and deceptively understated melodies with personal reflections on her life in New Orleans where she is now raising her two children with her partner, producer Mike Napolitano.

“It's such a humbling, and grueling, thing to raise children,” DiFranco said. “And that makes playing music more precious and makes me more grateful. It’s a real balancing act, but it also has a balancing effect.”

DiFranco adds that becoming a mother has brought her closer to listeners who have followed her music since she began performing in New York City during the early 1990s. But widespread attention never prevented her from holding on to her integrity, and independence. A strong belief in human rights has run throughout her work, including when she played at numerous benefit concerts around the world. At a time when record labels still held an oversized influence, DiFranco stood ahead of the curve in launching her own Righteous Babe Records. The company has released more than 20 of her albums to date, ranging from the popular two-disc live album, Living In Clip (1997), to the expansive To The Teeth (1999), which included such guests as legendary R&B saxophonist Maceo Parker and Prince. Journalist Sylvie Simmons wrote in the British music magazine MOJO in 1998, “Even if her overt politicism and her 200-shows-per-year tours with an acoustic guitar place her in the Woody Guthrie tradition, her music—which has boldly plundered funk or punk, hip hop, rock—doesn’t.”

Some stellar traditional New Orleans musicians and jazz players contributed to her 2012 disc, Which Side Are You On?, and the Crescent City also informsAllergic To Water, which is one of her most intimate and musically expansive recordings. This autumn, DiFranco will tour internationally behind Allergic To Water and the disc’s high-profile guests will accompany her stellar trio of bassist Todd Sickafoose and drummer Terence Higgins on several stops. Violinist Jenny Scheinman will open and sit in at some points. DiFranco has also marked other career milestones this past year. This summer she returned to the Winnipeg Folk Festival, where she received their prestigious Artistic Achievement award, coupled with her first ever honorary doctorate, which was given to her by the University of Winnipeg. She also marked the passing of one of her own mentors, Pete Seeger, through writing a moving essay about the man and his legacy in the Wall Street Journal.

“I think that my one grain of wisdom in my life, which serves me well, is that when I meet a great teacher, I follow them,” DiFranco said. “I invent excuses to be near them. Whether it’s Pete, Utah Phillips, or Sekou Sundiata, it’s made my life pretty great along the way.”

Colbie Caillat with High Dive Heart and Justin Young - The Malibu Sessions Acoustic Tour | To date, Colbie Caillat has been honored with Two Grammy Awards and sold over six million albums and ten million singles worldwide. Her breakthrough hit “Bubbly” remains “one of the best-selling digital tracks in history” and her multi-platinum debut COCO hit #5 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart upon release, while her sophomore set Breakthrough landed at #1. From 2011’s All of You, “Brighter Than The Sun” went platinum and enjoyed over twenty film and television placements, while seeing acclaim from People and NY Post. She’s also played sold out venues everywhere alongside everybody from John Mayer to Sheryl Crow.

Caillat welcomes change. Being a Gemini might have something to do with it, or it could just be her innate predilection for progression. Either way, the Grammy Award-winning, multiplatinum songstress’s fourth album, Gypsy Heart, and EP Gypsy Heart Side A, see her artistically evolve yet again.

“I like change,” she affirms. “I have a hard time picking one thing I love. Gypsy Heart sums up everything I am. I love listening to Bob Marley at the beach, while drinking a kale smoothie in my twenty-dollar Target bathing suit with zero makeup. At the same time, I love having my amazing style and hair and makeup team get me ready for shows. Other times, I’ll be dancing to dubstep in my dressing room, while drinking Jameson and eating donuts for breakfast. I’m all of those things. Musically, Gypsy Heart has the singer-songwriter style fans have loved all these years, but it’s more up-tempo with beats and heavy production on some songs. Combining those two sides was my goal.”

For Gypsy Heart’s campaign song “Try”, she joined forces with Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. Gently plucking an acoustic guitar along to a lush piano melody, the singer makes a powerful statement about female body image. For the lyric video, she enlists both fans and celebrities to appear without makeup, freeing themselves and bravely embracing natural beauty. Elsewhere on Gypsy Heart, Caillat cuts loose yet again. “Blaze” could very well be the life of the party over an endless summer with its kinetic energy and breezy hook. At the same time, “If You Love Me Let Me Go” examines a breakup with poetic lyrics and her striking vocal delivery.

At the end of the day, Colbie always challenges herself as a writer, regardless of which direction she travels. “I just want to write songs that stay with people,” she concludes. “If fans can listen to my music on repeat, that’s amazing. And play my songs during memorable moments in their life, I know I want that more than anything.”Beyond music, she’s an avowed spokesperson and supporter for the The Humane Society of the United States, the ASPCA, Farm Sanctuary, Surfrider Foundation, and Save The Music.

Nestled in the famed West End district, this stunningly restored art deco masterpiece from 1937 showcases only the finest acts in music and comedy. Franc D' Ambrosio - A Night With The Phantom @ Silo's | Some performers are meant to be on stage. They may be incandescent on the screen or inspirational in a studio, but it is on stage, in relationship with a live audience, where they shine. On tour an average of ten months out of each year, D'Ambrosio has been criss-crossing the country for the last several years with either his Hollywood or Broadway show - each a tuneful celebration of an industry in which he's had more than a little experience...

From the opening notes of "Almost Like Being In Love" from Brigadoon, D'Ambrosio's rich tenor caresses each song in an embrace - sometimes tender, sometimes humorous, but always passionate - that he does not relinquish until his final bow.

It is inevitable that an audience favorite, and nightly top vote-getter, will be D'Ambrosio's most well-known role, The Phantom of the Opera, which he performed here for a record-breaking five years. He's played the role more than any other actor to date and, in an expertly arranged sequence, he demonstrates why he is probably the best. Without benefit of prosthetic makeup, swirling fog or a crashing chandelier, D'Ambrosio delivers a masterful and very theatrical presentation of song snippets from the show leading into an extraordinary and astonishingly affecting rendering of "The Music of the Night." If it never worked for you before, suddenly the long-lived and oft-derided show makes sense. The yearning, the passion, the pain are all there on D'Ambrosio's unadorned face and the monster becomes man...one with whom you empathize. It is a master class performance. Most of the songs he performs are available on his two excellent CDs - "Franc D'Ambrosio's Broadway" and "Franc D'Ambrosio's Hollywood." Enjoyable as these recordings are - and they are very enjoyable - they are no substitute for the live experience. So get yourself to Silo's for the exceptional treat of an incredibly classy and gifted performer in an intimate, up close setting.

Richard Thompson And The Blind Boys of Alabama @ The Uptown | “The finest rock songwriter after Dylan and the best electric guitarist since Hendrix.” – Los Angeles Times

Named by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the Top 20 Guitarists of All Time, Richard Thompson is also one of the world’s most critically acclaimed and prolific songwriters. He has received Lifetime Achievement Awards for Songwriting on both sides of the Atlantic – from the Americana Music Association in Nashville to Britain’s BBC Awards as well as the prestigious Ivor Novello. In 2011, Thompson received an OBE (Order of the British Empire) personally bestowed upon him by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. In the USA Thompson has been nominated at the Americanas for both “Artist of the Year” and “Song of the Year”. His recently released CD, Still was produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy which reached #6 in the UK charts (just ahead of Taylor Swift)!

Having co-founded the groundbreaking group Fairport Convention as a teenager in the 60’s, Richard Thompson and his mates virtually invented British Folk Rock. By the age of 21 he left Fairport to pursue his own career, followed by a decade long musical partnership with his then-wife Linda, to over 30 years as a highly successful solo artist who tours both solo acoustic and with his electric trio.A wide range of musicians have recorded Thompson’s songs including Robert Plant, Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, REM, Del McCoury, Bonnie Raitt, Patty Lovelace, Los Lobos, Tom Jones, David Byrne, Don Henley, Robert Earl Keen and many others.Thompson’s genre defying mastery of both acoustic and electric guitar along with dizzying energy and onstage wit continue to earn Richard Thompson massive new fans and a place as one of the most distinctive virtuosos in Folk Rock history.

The Blind Boys of Alabama

The Blind Boys of Alabama have the rare distinction of being recognized around the world as both living legends and modern-day innovators. They are not just gospel singers borrowing from old traditions; the group helped to define those traditions in 20th century and almost single-handedly created a new gospel sound for the 21st. Since the original members first sang together as kids at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in the late 1930s (including Jimmy Carter, who leads the group today), the band has perserved through seven decades to become one of the most recognized and decorated roots music groups in the world.

Touring throughout the South during the Jim Crow era of the 1940s and 1950s, the Blind Boys flourished thanks to their unique sound, which blended the close harmonies of early jubilee gospel with the more fervent improvisations of hard gospel. In the early 1960s, the band sang at benefits for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and were a part of the soundtrack to the Civil Rights movement. It’s almost unbelievable that a group of blind, African-American singers, who started out touring during a time of of whites-only bathrooms, restaurants and hotels, went on to win five Grammy Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Grammy, be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and to perform at the White House for three different presidents.

Few would have expected them to still be going strong—stronger than ever, even—so many years after they first joined voices, but they’ve proved as productive and as musically ambitious in recent years as they did in the beginning. In 2001, they released Spirit of the Century on Peter Gabriel’s Real World label, mixing traditional church tunes with songs by Tom Waits and the Rolling Stones, and won the first of their Grammy Awards. Subsequent Grammy-winning albums have found them working with the likes of Ben Harper, Aaron Neville, Mavis Staples, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and Willie Nelson. In 2013 the band worked with Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver) to release I’ll Find A Way, a powerful collection of gospel and spiritual songs new and old, featuring some of the Blind Boys’ most f“ervent vocals as well as contributions by a new generation of Blind Boys fans, including Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, Patty Griffin, and Justin Vernon himself.

The Blind Boys’ live shows are roof-raising musical events that appeal to audiences of all cultures, as evidenced by an international itinerary that has taken them to virtually every continent. The Blind Boys of Alabama have attained the highest levels of achievement in a career that spans over 75 years and shows no signs of diminishing. “We appreciate the accolades and we thank God for them,” says Jimmy Carter, a founding member and the Blind Boys’ current leader. “But we’re not interested in money or anything other than singing gospel. We had no idea when we started that we would make it this far. The secret to our longevity is, we love what we do. And when you love what you do, that keeps you motivated. That keeps you alive.”

Johnny Smith Live @ River Terrace Inn |

Join us for our live music series on the patio over-looking the Napa River and featuring some of the area's top talent.Johnny’s maturity as a musician is realized as his sultry, soulful voice weaves throughout songs reminiscent of sophisticated blues melded with upbeat rock tempos.

Artist Johnny Smith was born in Long Beach California in 1962. He began his musical life at a very young age. Born into a musical family, Johnny’s mother nurtured his vocal talents while his uncle and aunt, well known music icons Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett, provided musical mentoring and advice. But it was a televised performance of Elvis playing “Hound Dog” that truly inspired the 9 year old Smith to pick up the guitar and pursue a life of performance and by the age of 10, he was regularly invited to perform on stage with local professional musicians. Johnny eventually relocated to San Francisco and formed Alias Smith, a roots/rock influenced band which took first prize in a regional Battle of the Bands competition. Alias Smith’s debut CD by the same name garnered much praise, and helped the band to secure an 18 date tour throughout Sweden and Finland as well as stage performances alongside such reputable artists as The Beach Boys, Starship, Maria Muldaur, and Roger McGuinn to name a few.

Wishing to further his musical vision, Mr. Smith became a solo artist and released the album “Just a Man”. Johnny’s maturity as a musician is realized as his sultry, soulful voice weaves throughout songs reminiscent of sophisticated blues melded with upbeat rock tempos. The hit “Love Is like a Rock” became #1 on radio request lines, and the song “Fortune Teller” received honourable mention in the Napa Valley Music Festival Song Writers Competition. Johnny has won best performer 3 of 3 times at the Northern California Songwriters Association competition, and is a regular on live television and radio broadcasts. Through all of his successes, Smith has never lost “touch” with his roots and still performs on the original Martin D-35 that he’s been playing since age 12.

Johnny's Aunt Bonnie Bramlett co-wrote and performs , along with Johnny's cousin Bekka Bramlett, on "Never Even Thought About It", track number 5 on the 2009 album "Gentlemen X".

Steve Della Maggiora- Guitarist from Napa, California. Raised in the 50s and 60s, he absorbed not only songs his parents loved from the Big Band era (and Lawrence Welk Show) but also pop tune from the blossoming Top 40 Radio world. Both his parents were singers, and he was raised in a house full of music. Several years of accordion lessons left their mark, as did the bands he saw on the Ed Sullivan Show and American Bandstand. After high school he devoted himself to learning the guitar and bass, and began transferring his accordion skills to piano and organ (a process that is still ongoing today.)

Steve is a multi-instrumental, multi-talented musician. He plays guitar, bass guitar, piano, organ, and, when his arm heals up, accordion. He sometimes plays solo. He sometimes accompanies singers, in a variety of styles, especially melodic tunes from before the 20s and 30s right up through the 60s and 70s. (But he's pretty shaky on the more modern recent stuff!) Steve plays with a variety of groups: bass in a pop-folk-novelty duo; guitar with a classical and jazz violinist; organ, bass or guitar with a fine rock band; organ with an electric blues band; accordion, keyboards, guitar and sings with an Americana-Rock-Folk ensemble; plays guitar and sings with a blues/bluegrass/Django-ish quartet; plays guitar or accordion with a Mexican-American dance group; and guitar with a highly skilled Cool Jazz Octet. All of these groups play in the North Bay Area, as we call the counties to the north of San Francisco.

Often Steve seems happiest sitting with his guitar (acoustic or electric) and playing whatever you want to hear. If you'd like him to accompany you, he has a list of well over 1000 tunes he can play. (And the list seems to be getting longer every day!)

Justin Diaz @ Uva Trattoria | From his earliest years, Justin sang along, and it quickly became evident that he had a big voice and a keen musical ear. His musical reach expanded to the trumpet, drums, piano, ukulele and guitar, and by his teens he was writing and composing his own music. His smooth vocals made him a local favorite, destined to be the next American Idol sweetheart, but fame wasn't what he was after.

At 18, Justin pursued the deeper things in life, and moved to Japan and the UK to study. Upon graduation, he traveled extensively, and by age 24, Justin had visited 50+ countries and 49 states in his own way: slowly and curiously, staying in the homes of strangers that were destined to become good friends, savoring sunsets, and sharing truthful conversations over good wine.

In 2014, Justin returned to the Napa Valley to share his talents and stories. He currently performs on a variety of stages - from lounges, wineries and breweries, to weddings and dementia wards - and serves as a music therapist for the elderly. Justin also continues to travel widely as he pursues simplicity and substance through the medium of music.

HIS SOULFUL VOCALS BREATHE LIFE INTO DECADES OF CLASSICS AND ORIGINALS, AND BRINGS CLASS AND WHIMSY TO LOUNGES, TASTING ROOMS, WEDDINGS, AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN

FREDDY COLE @ The BlueNote (2 Shows Nightly Thursday - Sunday) | Lionel Frederick Cole was born on October 15, 1931, the youngest of Edward and Paulina Nancy Cole’s five children. His three elder brothers, Eddie, Ike and Nat (twelve years Freddy’s senior) were all musicians. Though Freddy Cole was born in Chicago, he is a 35-year native son and international celebrity of Atlanta.

Cole doesn’t apologize for sounding like his brother, Nat “King” Cole. There are certain unmistakable similarities. He plays piano and sings and performs live with guitar and upright bass, just like Nat. Yet his voice is raspier, smokier, jazzier even. But he has emerged from the awesome shadow cast by his elder brother. In truth, his phrasing is far closer to that of Frank Sinatra or Billie Holiday than that of his brother and his timing swings a little more. His vocals – suave, elegant, formidable, and articulate – are among the most respected in jazz. Cole’s career continues to ascend as he has moved into the front ranks of America’s homegrown art form with a style and musical sophistication all his own

Vallejo Jazz Society Presents: Denise Perrier Holiday Show @ The Empress | Vallejo Jazz Society Presents: Denise Perrier has spent her career performing in the San Francisco Bay Area and touring extensively in Europe, Latin America and Asia. Hearkening back to the time when a singer told the story and left the rest to the instrumentalists, Denise has a very welcoming straight-ahead style. Blessed with a rich, contralto voice, she concentrates on the standards, adding blues and Latin for variety. She is equally at home in a duo, quartet, big band or orchestra setting. But whatever the musical configuration, Denise connects with audiences – that’s her forte. She is known as “the voice with a heart.” Whether performing in an intimate supper club like Feinstein’s or a large venue like New York City’s Jazz at Lincoln Center, singing a haunting melody like Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Dindi” or laying down a smoking version of Teddy Edwards’ “Don’t Touch Me,” Denise Perrier thrills audiences with her sultry contralto and emotional lyric interpretation. Join us for a special holiday show that will bring your whole family lots of Christmas cheer.
