Chris Isaak @ Uptown Theatre Napa | Yes, after more than a quarter of a century into his career, Chris Isaak has finally created the album he’s always wanted to make. Beyond the Sun, Isaak’s first Vanguard Records release out Oct. 18 —is truly a labor of love. As a child spinning his parents 45s in their Stockton, California home, this deeply committed artist has been obsessed with the glory days of Memphis’ Sun Studio and the visionary artists who got their starts there—including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis—all of them discovered and nurtured by the late, great Sun Records founder Sam Phillips. Now, at long last, Isaak has acted on this lifelong obsession, magically recapturing the transformative hepcat brilliance of the classic sides cut by these greats at Sun with Phillips during the mid-’50s, while also getting down to the heart and soul of his own deeply rooted musical identity. Beyond the Sun will be available in both the 14-song standard set as well as a double album version that includes an additional 11 tracks.

“I did this because I love this music—that’s the entire reason,” Isaak explains, advising, “you gotta listen to the original ones—they’re classics – they’re awesome but you can have fun with them. These guys discovered this music for us and we had to rediscover it. There’s no way to do it exactly like they did it, so you’ve gotta give a little bit of your own take on it.”

Considering how unmistakably Isaak’s own music has been inspired by that of the Sun greats, particularly Presley and Orbison, the obvious question is, what took him so long? “When I started making music, I thought that if I do those songs, where do I go from there?” he says. “I wanted to make sure I found my own sound and established who I was. But I always loved that music and I wrote songs in that spirit. You can go through all my songs and you won’t find one reference to goin’ to the bop. They’re about my life, not about nostalgia for the ’50s. I came to a point where I felt like the time was right to do this record. I’d met all my heroes and worked with most of them, and I didn’t hear anybody else doing it the way I wanted to do it.”

Isaak is joined on the record by his longtime band—bass player Rowland Salley and drummer Kenney Dale Johnson, who’ve been with him from the start, guitarist Hershel Yatovitz, pianist Scott Plunkett, and percussionist Rafael Padilla—and it turns out every one of these skilled musicians shares Chris’ passion for the Sun sound, along with a rarified feel for playing it.

“There’s just something about my band that was really right for it, because they all love that kind of music”Isaak points out. “I’ll tell you somethin’: everybody thinks early country is easy to play. It’s not easy. It’s just as hard to play as, like, abstract jazz fusion or anything else. It’s got a feel, and if you get the feel wrong, everything’s wrong. And I don’t think you could find a better rhythm section than mine for playing this music anywhere. Kenney is the shuffle king. And on top of that, Scotty, my piano player, just nailed this stuff. I really don’t think there’s anybody who could play it any better.”

Uptown Theatre is excited to welcome this veteran Uptown performer again on August 8th for what will surely be another exciting event from Chris Issak.

Napa River Inn Summer Music: Darrell Edward Heavy Weather Band @ Silo's Napa | Step out of the cold and warm up with FUNKIN, neo-soul rhythm and blues..!

Darrell Edwards re-established The Darrell Edwards "HEAVY WEATHER BAND" in 2009, and established IBDWE Entertainment Company in late 2010.

Darrell Edwards Heavy Weather Band is again promoting his music live on stage while offering his original music in his new EP entitled "IN MY Heart"! The bands main focus and theme is to play "Music for Life," touching on the duality of playing music to inspire and enliven audiences and performing until they absolutely can no longer.

Some of their most memorable performances were the 2013 Wounded Warriors Benefit at Wooden Valley Winery, the Winter Hawk Winery Summer Fest, Solano County Fair 2013, which all three launched them into the top 10 performing bands on ReverbNation Charts. Finally, the 2013 “Pink Benefit Concert” held in Fairfield CA, which funded on-going cancer research. Performing mainly R&B, neo-soul, and blues.

Darrell and his band mates have shared the stage with Tony Lindsey (11 Grammys / Lead Singer for Carlos Santana), Skyler Jett (Past Lead Singer of the Commodores), Rich Stevens (Original Singer Tower of Power), and Tom Politzer (Saxophonist Tower Of Power).

Berlin WITH SAD ROBOT @ City Winery Napa | “New music is the lifeblood of anybody making music— it’s that creation, excitement, new babies [songs]! It inspires me and it inspires others,” declares Terri Nunn, the charismatic and enigmatic singer of L.A.’s iconic synth electro-pop pioneers, BERLIN. Animal, a brand-new 12-track offering, explores contemporary electronic dance music while remaining true to the groundbreaking sound and signature vocals that continue to define BERLIN. The first single, “It’s the Way”— a confessional ballad about “a fear of connection”— could easily be the group’s next “Take My Breath Away” (BERLIN’s #1 hit / Academy Award-winning single, featured in Top Gun). It’s the perfect counterpoint to the sexy, eminently danceable title track (“So kiss me when you pull my hair / I like it when you make it hurt”), or to “Blame It On The World,” a painfully poignant song for her father.

A NIGHT OF SILO'S IDOL WINNERS: Todd Morgan & the Emblems WITH MELINA DIAZ & TORI ANNA LANGFITT @Silo'sNapa | This four piece Sacramento based band, formed in 2006, brings plenty of excitement to any stage. Writing mainly Pop/Rock tunes these days, the band’s leader, Todd Morgan, was selected as the "2014 Silo's Idol" contest winner.

As a piano player, Todd is often compared to the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis and other exciting piano men of the 50’s, which is the band's roots. So much so that all of Todd's original songs on his first album has been selected as the sound track of "All American Horror", a movie based in 1959, that will be released fall of 2014. The band has taken their musical energy into the future blending it with nearly every musical faction along the way and creating what has become their own sound of Pop/Rock, while still holding tight to that vibrant sound that is Rock & Roll.

Built to Spill @ Uptown Theatre Napa | Three and a half years in the making, the efforts of writing and recording THERE IS NO ENEMY led Built to Spill founder Doug Martsch to wonder whether this would be the last album he ever makes. As Doug poured over lyrics and notes, hour after hour , day after day, he realized that a musician and artist like himself edits far more than he keeps.

For over twenty years, Doug Martsch has been writing and recording music. Built to Spill members Brett Nelson (bass), Scott Plouf (drums) Jim Roth (guitar), and Brett Netson (guitar) have all been musicians for two decades. That adds up to more than a century. Doug’s strong aesthetic combines with the band members’ mix of approaches to create an aural topography. Doug sets course and navigates. Each member of Built to Spill comes to the music with a different set of expectations and ideals.

With the complexity and variety of music they have created, Built to Spill endeavors to make songs interesting to themselves and their audience. They hope that the band will remain special and that people will discover the music for themselves. Year after year, new fans show up. Just like the band members, listeners come to the music with expectations and ideals. They make up their own ideas about the songs.

When making the new record, There Is No Enemy, Doug literally lived in the studio working all day and all night spending hours and hours laying down guitar tracks he realized he couldn’t use because the first live takes had the best tone and feel. He undigitally remixed the record and now with much work behind the band, the record is here. Now comes the album’s journey into the world and this record is now yours to respond to.

Marshall Tucker Band @ Uptown Theatre | THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND KEEPS ON ROCKIN’ – 40 YEARS & COUNTING…

In the early fall of 1973 The Marshall Tucker Band was still a young and hungry group out to prove themselves every time they hit the stage. Their debut album had already spawned numerous hits. The band’s recent release of their Greatest Hits album, in traditional vinyl form, is a time capsule from that period. “We were a bunch of young guys who didn’t know any boundaries” says founding member and longtime lead singer Doug Gray. As it turned out, the collective talents of The Marshall Tucker Band took them very far indeed. More than four decades later, the new vinyl Greatest Hits release takes us back to the early years of The Marshall Tucker Band, both literally and physically.

Still led today by founding member and lead singer Doug Gray, they represent a time and place in music that will never be duplicated. Gray is quick to credit the band’s current dynamic members with carrying on the timeless essence of the Marshall Tucker Band sound. Current members include the highly respected drummer B.B. Borden, a former member of both Mother’s Finest and The Outlaws, multi-instrumentalist Marcus Henderson of Macon, Georgia, plays flute, saxophone and keyboards in addition to lead and background vocals, Pat Elwood on bass guitar, and Rick Willis on lead guitar and vocals, both of Spartanburg SC, are disciples of the Caldwell Brothers. Acclaimed lead guitarist and vocalist Chris Hicks recently rejoined the band after a two-year absence. Together they present a powerful stage presence as they continue to tour the country and continue to be a powerful force in the world of music.

Years of rigorous tour schedules earned the band the respect of critics and countless dedicated fans. With hit singles like “Heard It In a Love Song,” “Fire On The Mountain,” “Can’t You See,” and “Take The Highway,” The Marshall Tucker Band earned seven gold and three platinum albums while they were on the Capricorn Records label. During the 90′s, the MTB scored four hit singles on Billboard’s country chart and one on Billboard’s gospel chart. Their music has also been featured on the soundtracks of movies such as Smokey and the Bandit, Blow, The Pursuit of D.B. Cooper, Shipwrecked, Crank 2, Don’t Mess with Zohan, Stop Loss, Swing Vote, Taking Chance and many others as well as many TV Shows.

“The buying public never really cared whether we were country or rock and roll” says Gray. “They called us a Southern rock band, but we have always played everything from country, jazz, blues, Rock & Roll and all things in-between. As we’ve become older, “Gray grins, eyes twinkling, “our Southern heritage seems to come out even more. But no matter how old we get, we can still rock your socks off.” Gray also notes that people have gotten “married and buried” to classic MTB songs like “Desert Skies” and “Can’t You See”. After 40 years, The Marshall Tucker Band continues to be played on classic rock and country radio, and they have never stopped touring.
