Shawn Colvin + Steve Earle “SONGS + STORIES, TOGETHER ONSTAGE @ City Winery Napa | 6:00 PM DOORS / 8:00 PM START

“Shawn Colvin is one of America’s warmest and wisest songwriters.” Sunday Times

“Steve Earle is rightly regarded as one of America’s greatest songwriters.” Q Magazine

Grammy Award winning singer-songwriters Shawn Colvin and Steve Earle have announced a special run of tour dates together this May. “Songs and Stories, Together Onstage” features the two esteemed artists sharing the stage for a rousing night of song swapping, duets, storytelling and stellar guitar playing. The evening promises to be a rich and inspiring musical experience as these two long-time friends and mutual admirers share music from their extensive catalogues as well as some of their favorite songs by other classic songwriters.

In an era when female singer-songwriters are ever more ubiquitous. Shawn Colvin stands out as singular and enduring talent. Her songs are works of craft and catharsis that become treasured, lifetime companions for their listeners. In the 25 years since the release of her debut album she has won three Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year and Record of the Year for the hit single ‘Sunny Came Home’, and has been nominated for another seven. She has released 10 albums, appeared on countless television and radio programs, had her songs featured in major motion pictures, maintained a non-stop national and international touring schedule, and created a remarkable canon of work. Over the years Shawn has shared the stage with such legendary artists as Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Hornsby, Emmylou Harris, Don Henley, James Taylor and Lyle Lovett. In a live review The Guardian newspaper praised her “…extraordinary songs, mesmerising guitar playing, and a voice that goes effortlessly from bruise-tender to scar-hard in a matter of minutes.”

A protégé of legendary songwriters Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, Steve Earle quickly became a master storyteller in his own right, with his songs being recorded by Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Travis Tritt, The Pretenders, Joan Baez and countless others. In 1986 his debut record, Guitar Town shot to number one on the country charts and immediately established the term “New Country.” An array of releases followed, including the biting hard rock of Copperhead Road (1988), the minimalist beauty of Train A Comin’ (1995), as well as the politically charged masterpiece, Jerusalem (2002), plus the Grammy Award Winning albums The Revolution Starts…Now (2004), Washington Square Serenade (2007), and Townes (2009). 2011 saw the release of his Grammy Award nominated album, I’ll Never Get Out Of This World Alive, as well as the publication of his debut novel by the same name. Of the novel, Patti Smith stated, “Steve Earle brings to his prose the same authenticity, poetic spirit and cinematic energy he projects in his music. I’ll Never Get Out Of This World Alive is like a dream you can’t shake, offering beauty and remorse, redemption in spades.”

Gregg Allman @ Uptown Theatre Napa | Gregory Lenoir Allman (born December 8, 1947 in Nashville, Tennessee), known as Gregg Allman, is a rock and blues singer, keyboardist, guitarist, and songwriter, best known as a founding member of The Allman Brothers Band. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 with The Allman Brothers Band, and personally received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2006.

As a founding member of the one and only Allman Brothers Band and in his own storied solo career, Allman has long been a gifted natural interpreter of the blues, his soulful and distinctive voice one of the defining sounds in the history of American music. Low Country Blues marks the legendary Rock & Roll Hall of Famer’s seventh solo recording and first in more than 13 years. Produced by T Bone Burnett, the album finds Allman putting his own stamp on songs by some of the blues giants whose work has long informed his own, from Muddy Waters and BB King to Buddy Guy and Magic Sam. Named for the coastal Georgia region Allman calls home, Low Country Blues stands as a high water mark in an already remarkable body of work, rich with passion, verve, and the unerring confidence of a true survivor.

Stephen Stills @ City Winery Napa | 6:00 PM DOORS / 8:00 PM

FOR THIS SPECIAL SHOW, STEPHEN PLANS TO PLAY TWO SETS. FIRST SET WILL BE SOLO ACOUSTIC. SECOND SET WILL BE ELECTRIC BAND SET.

Legendary singer-songwriter and guitarist Stephen Stills is the only artist ever to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame two times in one night—in 1997, for Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, and Nash (CSN). In 2011, Stills performed high-profile dates with both iconic acts, in addition to touring on his own. One of rock music's most enduring figures, Stills is also a member of the Songwriter's Hall of Fame, a BMI Music Icon (with CSN), and has a career now spanning six decades, multiple solo works, and four hugely influential groups—Manassas and Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young (CSN&Y), in addition to the two already mentioned.

As renowned for his instrumental virtuosity as for writing era-defining anthems including "For What It's Worth" and "Love The One You're With," Stills is ranked #28 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. They noted, "…in Springfield and CSN&Y, Stills challenged and complemented Young's feral breaks with a country-inflected chime. And a continuing highlight of CSN&Y shows is Stills' acoustic picking in ‘Suite: Judy Blue Eyes'— a paragon of unplugged beauty." Three of Stills' albums are also among Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time: Buffalo Springfield Again, Crosby, Stills & Nash (on which he played almost every instrument) and Déjà Vu.

“35 years ago, “Heartbreaker” (on the debut album “In The Heat of The Night”) was the catalyst for it all,” said Pat Benatar. “It’s hard to believe that so much time has passed. We’re excited to be celebrating this personal and musical milestone. The summer tour should be an incredible, shared experience with the audience.”

“From the very beginning our chemistry was undeniable,” remarked Neil Giraldo. “This is the driving force behind everything we do. After 35 years of playing together, we’re looking forward to the summer tour and the future, which will surely be…adventurous.”

Together, with Benatar’s mezzo-soprano vocal range and Giraldo’s trail-blazing work as a guitarist, producer and songwriter, Pat Benatar and Neil “Spyder” Giraldo have forged one of the most successful partnerships in rock & roll history. John Mayall @ City Winery Napa | 6:00 PM DOORS / 8:00 PM START

John Mayall was born on the 29th of November 1933 and grew up in a village not too far from Manchester, England. It was here as a teenager that he first became attracted to the jazz and blues 78s in his father's record collection. Initially it was all about guitarists such as Eddie Lang, Lonnie Johnson, Brownie McGhee, Josh White and Leadbelly. However once he heard the sounds of boogie woogie giants Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson and Meade Lux Lewis, his desire to play was all he could think of. At the age of 14 when he went to Manchester's Junior School of Art, he had access to a piano for the first time and he began to learn the basics of this exciting music. He also found time to continue learning the guitar and a couple of years later, the harmonica, inspired by Sonny Terry, Sonny Boy Williamson and Little Walter.

Hugh Laurie with The Copper Bottom Band @ The Uptown Theatre | “Let Them Talk” is the first album to be recorded by Hugh Laurie after signing to Warner Bros Records in 2010. Produced by Joe Henry and recorded in Los Angeles and New Orleans, the album is a celebration of New Orleans blues, a genre that drives Hugh’s musical raison d’être. Spiritually inspired by similar genre albums like Ry Cooder’s ‘Buena Vista Social Club’ and T-Bone Burnett’s ‘O’ Brother Where Art Thou’ soundtrack, Hugh’s ‘Let Them Talk’ recordings bring together an extraordinary selection of heritage tracks, renowned musicians and vocal legends to champion this much neglected body of work.

But the album is best explained by Hugh himself……..

"I was not born in Alabama in the 1890s. You may as well know this now. I’ve never eaten grits, cropped a share, or ridden a boxcar. No gypsy woman said anything to my mother when I was born and there’s no hellhound on my trail, as far as I can judge. Let this record show that I am a white, middle-class Englishman, openly trespassing on the music and myth of the American south.

If that weren’t bad enough, I’m also an actor: one of those pampered ninnies who hasn’t bought a loaf of bread in a decade and can’t find his way through an airport without a babysitter. I wouldn’t be surprised to find that I’ve got some Chinese characters tattooed on my arse. Or elbow. Same thing.

Worst of all, I’ve broken a cardinal rule of art, music, and career paths: actors are supposed to act, and musicians are supposed to music. That’s how it works. You don’t buy fish from a dentist, or ask a plumber for financial advice, so why listen to an actor’s music?

The answer is – there is no answer. If you care about provenance and genealogy, then you should try elsewhere, because I have nothing in your size."

Hot House Blues: Steve Freund @ Historic Empress Theatre | Steve Freund brings his great band to the Empress to help us celebrate the beginning of our third year of Wednesday Night Music programming. Steve is one of the finest Blues musicians you can find, and he's part of the Empress family.

Steve Freund
Guitarist, producer and bandleader Steve Freund, praised by Rolling Stone for his "masterful, no-nonsense guitar work,” offers a treasure of experience and advice to bluesmen as the Red House jam host.

Steve has appeared on 34 albums, and produced seven. Steve’s third studio album, Lonesome Flight, was released by 9 Below Productions in 2010 and included nine original songs along with four blues classics. He also played on Koko Taylor’s Grammy winning Blues Explosion.

Steve began his career in Chicago as a second guitar behind Hubert Sumlin, Lee Jackson, Homesick James, Louis Myers, and many others. He spent two years working with Big Walter Horton and Floyd Jones, learning the deep blues and the idiosyncrasies that are part of the art. In 1978, he became Sunnyland Slim's main guitarist, playing just about every gig with the piano legend until the time of his death. Freund became the consummate piano accompanist working with Pinetop Perkins, Jimmy Walker, Henry Gray, Erwin Helfer, David Maxwell and many more.

He moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in the 90’s, and plays regularly at The Saloon in San Francisco, Cafe Van Kleef in Oakland, Armando's in martinez, and also tours nationally and internationally. He was good friends with the late great Johnny Nitro, who he succeeds as Red House’s chief bluesman.

Party Beyond BottleRock with VIP Lounge Artist: Thom Chacon @ Uva Trattoria | “Thom Chacon’s music is simple, but don’t mistake that for a lack of depth. Simple writing is the hardest writing. And always the best. His songs are packed with rich imagery and instantly relatable sensibilities. He is a real writer, and by that I mean he has infected visions. I salute him.”
– Mary Gauthier

“I’m living the American dream / Fo’ sho’ / I’m worth more dead Because baby, I owe.”

Thom Chacon could well be the subject for one of his own evocative songs. On his self-titled sophomore album on the Pie label, the Durango, CO, singer-songwriter takes on the “American Dream” in no uncertain terms. Recorded at producer Perry Margouleff’s famed Pie Studios in Glen Cove, N.Y., with Bob Dylan’s rhythm section of drummer George Recile and bassist Tony Garnier, Thom Chacon offers a series of compelling narratives that focus on the forgotten members of society.

Born in Southern California, but raised in Sacramento, Chacon is the son of a Hispanic father, a newscaster who became a public relations executive, and a Lebanese mother, a kindergarten teacher, with five sisters (he was the second youngest). He first showed an interest in music at a young age, offering as proof a tape recording of him singing “Rhinestone Cowboy” as a three-year-old. Thom listened to story-tellers like Glen Campbell, Jim Croce, the Beatles of Rubber Soul and Smokey Robinson on his parents’ record player before picking up a guitar in fourth grade. He wrote his first song at age 16. “It wasn’t very good, but in all these years, I’ve never stopped. It’s something I have to do.”

Seeing Kris Kristofferson wear a harp rack inspired him to don one as well. “If you’re a solo artist, it’s your second band mate,” he says, before adding, “for me, it’s less about my voice and guitar-playing then it is the words and melody, which is why I modeled myself after what he was doing.”

Moving to Los Angeles in his early 20s, Thom originally sought fame and fortune in the L.A. music scene, then quickly realized he needed something more authentic. He took a job on a horse ranch in the foothills of Los Angeles, learning how to ride and take care of the horses.

Eventually, Thom decided to move to Durango, Colorado, seeking more of life’s outdoor adventures, and to concentrate on his songwriting. Thom became a part time fly-fishing guide, and when not on tour, takes people on horseback into the mountains of Colorado and New Mexico for extended camping and fly-fishing expeditions.

The cinematic nature of Thom’s songs comes not only from spending time as a true outdoorsman, but also from a love of movies and vintage television westerns, with a special affection for the films of John Ford, and John Wayne, a favorite of his mom.

Thom’s narrative style is influenced by Kris Kristofferson, Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt, among others. He also draws influence from his colorful family history. His second cousin, Bobby Chacon was two-time boxing featherweight champion. “Bobby taught me no matter how hard it gets, you’ve go to get up off the mat and keeping fighting.” His grandfather was deputy sheriff in Silver City, New Mexico and part of the posse sent to capture Billy the Kid!

Thom has gone on to tour around the world, opening for artists as diverse as Los Lonely Boys and Jason Mraz, playing shows in Thailand and India, and even one memorable gig on July 4, 2004 at Folsom Prison, shortly after the death of another of his idols, Johnny Cash. “That was a life-changing experience for me,” he says.

With his current music reflecting a good dose of lifetime experiences, along with the hard-earned wisdom of a man who’s paid his dues both on the land and the water, Thom Chacon is now being touted by the press as “an Americana original” and “one of the most important songwriters of our time.”

Party Beyond BottleRock with VIP Lounge Artist: AutumnSky @ Uva Trattoria | Autumn Sky has made things go her way with her musical career for over 10 years. Not only has the young singer/songwriter from Sacramento made her musical path her own, she has done it with a grace, style and charm that can only come from someone who is truly inspired by herself; by someone who has the confidence, drive and talent to make a vision for herself that she feels is the right vision to follow.

Performing her music since she was 15, the sassy redhead has played with words since she was very young, writing poetry and creating a lyrical style that has grown and blossomed with her years. Now at 25, the songstress is ever recreating herself with each experience she has, crafting songs and words that tell a story of who she is with an honest directness that is disarming and thought provoking.

The Both: AIMEE MANN & TED LEO @ City Winery Napa | Collectively and individually, Aimee Mann and Ted Leo have more years of musical experience under their belts than most. You might call them "lifers." But they were first drawn into each others circles by the late, great Scott Miller (Game Theory/Loud Family), who brought Ted to Aimee's awareness back in 2001. Over the years, they became friendly, getting lunch when Ted was in Los Angeles or Aimee was in New York, guesting on this or that comedy or music show together, etc., but they truly bonded over a misspelled word and a hashtag on Twitter, "#dumbie."

Their mutual appreciation of such #dumb things and increased communication (140 characters at a time) eventually lead to a tour together, which lead to spending more time with each other's music and in each other's company, which lead to them guesting on each other's songs nightly on tour, and another mutual appreciation via a chance over-hearing in a hotel room in Chicago, as Aimee came to collect Ted to go get lunch again (they like lunch): early Thin Lizzy.

Inspired by the folksy but edgy rock melodicism and spooky, soulful atmosphere of songs like "Honesty is no Excuse" (which they, in fact, began covering), Aimee sent Ted the stem of a new song just one week after their first tour together had ended. They began writing together, and "The Both" (originally called #BOTH, because it made them laugh) was born.

They completed what was first slated to be an EP over the course of the next couple of months, but growing ever closer and ever more fulfilled working together, The Both began to take shape as a real and ongoing concern, and the EP became the first part of what will now be an LP, to be finished in August of this year and released, most likely, in early 2014. They'll be continuing to tour with each of their separate concerns (though even then, mostly together) throughout the remainder of 2013, but will also be playing shows as The Both, and will tour in support of the LP upon release.

Red Molly w/ Aoife O’Donovan @ City Winery Napa | Since 2004, Americana trio Red Molly has been bringing audiences to their feet with gorgeous three-part harmonies, crisp musicianship, and their warm, engaging stage presence. The band consists of Laurie MacAllister (bass, banjo), Abbie Gardner (dobro, banjo) and Molly Venter (guitar). This past year, the ladies were invited to open multiple shows for music legend Willie Nelson and they performed at the venerable RockyGrass festival in CO. Their new CD "Light in the Sky" spent 20 weeks on the Americana Music Association's Top 40 radio chart and charted as Folk DJ's #3 Top Album of 2012. In 2013, the band will spend the month of March touring throughout Australia, and in August will head to Europe for the first time, for Denmark's Tonder Festival. They have also been invited to appear for the third time at NC's legendary music gathering, MerleFest. Also scheduled is a fourth appearance at the Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion, where in September 2012 the Bristol Herald Courier dubbed Red Molly "The Twin City's sweethearts", saying the band "lit up the stage, as a massive crowd of adoring fans sat mesmerized by their silky smooth harmonies and superb musicianship."

Napa Valley Opera House Presents: Tommy Castro And The Painkillers | “I’m always moving forward, going outside of my wheelhouse, listening to new music and incorporating new ideas,” says award-winning guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Tommy Castro. “The contemporary blues scene is full of fresh, new sounds It’s an exciting time.” Castro is famed for his signature brand of tough, rocking rhythm and blues, thrilling fans around the world with his incendiary live performances. With his turbo-charged new Alligator Records album, The Devil You Know, Castro strips his music down to its raw essence as he rockets into the next phase of his storied career.

The Devil You Know, recorded in the Bay Area with his fiery new band The Painkillers and produced by Castro and Bonnie Hayes, is a contemporary blues tour-de-force. The album is an untamed, high-energy set of 13 songs, including nine written or co-written by Castro. “For the new album I challenged myself to add different sounds and new rhythms to my style while remaining true to my roots. I wrote using ideas for songs and ideas for sounds together in a way I’d never done before,” explains Castro, “using drum rhythms to drive the lyrics.” The tracks—melodic and biting, energetic and fun—are brought to life with sonic authority by bassist Randy McDonald (from the original Tommy Castro Band), keyboardist James Pace and original Painkillers drummer Byron Cage.

In addition, many of Castro’s friends and admirers, including Alligator label-mates Marcia Ball and The Holmes Brothers, add their talents to the proceedings. Other guests include guitarists Joe Bonamassa and Mark Karan, guitarist/vocalist Tab Benoit, vocalists Samantha Fish and Tasha Taylor and harmonica player Magic Dick. Each song comes loaded with emotional depth and muscular hooks courtesy of Castro’s soulful singing, insightful lyrics and dynamic, potent guitar playing. With The Devil You Know, Castro—The Painkillers blazing behind him—unleashes an instant classic. According to Blurt, “Castro is one of the greatest blues guitarists, songwriters and entertainers in the world today.”

After years of playing guitar-driven blues and R&B backed by a tight horn section, Castro introduced The Painkillers live in 2012, creating a lean, mean four-piece lineup, with the drum chair now held by David Tucker. Fueled by Tommy’s voice and guitar plus bass, drums and keyboards, the band released the 45rpm single Greedy / That’s All I Got later that year (both songs are included as bonus tracks on the new CD). Greedy quickly became one of Castro’s most-requested songs. An attention-grabbing video for Greedy has already received over 150,000 views on YouTube. The Chicago Sun-Times calls his music “fiery and soul-drenched.”

Castro views the harder-edged sound of The Painkillers as a natural extension of the music he’s been making since he was a teenager. “The Painkillers really get me back to my roots. It feels to me a lot more like it did when I first started playing with my friends as a kid. Bands were always just three or four guys playing for the fun of it,” Castro recalls. Now, Tommy Castro And The Painkillers are pushing the music to another level.

Tommy Castro And The Painkillers are anxious to bring The Devil You Know to life on stage night after night, personally connecting with their fans all over the world. “A lot of folks are having hard times these days,” Castro says, “and they need something to lift them up and make them smile. Our music kills the pain.” With The Devil You Know, Castro, along with The Painkillers, will unquestionably be easing pain, lifting spirits and filling dance floors the same way he’s been doing for decades—only now he’s packing an even more feral punch.

Revolver “A 50 Years’ Night” @ Silo's Napa | Join Revolver as they commemorate The Beatles' coming to America 50 (yes, 50!) years ago. They'll be playing the Beatles' first American album, Meet the Beatles, as well as their first British album, Please Please Me. And hey, while they're at it, they might play a few more from the Beatles catalog, if ya want… This is Revolver, after all... It's a Beatlestravaganza!

Revolver is a trio of seasoned musicians who grew up rocking to the sounds of the 60's. Inspired by the songwriting and melodic hooks of groups like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beau Brummels, Hollies, Kinks, Animals, Lovin' Spoonful and Buffalo Springfield, they took up instruments and formed groups to experience the energy and sensations of playing in a fired-up band. Some of the first tunes they learned were some of these well-crafted gems from artists of the 60's. Their love and appreciation for that genre of music is why they decided to form the group Revolver in the first place.

All three members are singers and multi-instrumentalists, giving Revolver a full and versatile sound including great lead singing, three-part harmonies, and a musical blend of guitars, keyboards, bass, drums and percussion. It's a big sound for three guys.

Revolver is: Michael Budash on guitars, keyboards and vocals, Barry Blum on bass guitar, guitars, keyboards and vocals, and Dan Durkin on drums, rhythm guitar, keyboards, harmonica and vocals. All three members have distinguished writing and musical credits to their names that include songwriting, performances, recordings, commercials, and film soundtracks.

Revolver has played some of the hottest clubs in the Bay Area and are available for concert dates and a wide range of other events including parties, weddings, fairs, festivals and corporate events. Because of their versatility, Revolver can provide right music and volume for your event. In addition, they will learn special request tunes, within reason, as part of their musical offering.

NVJS Presents: Erik Jekabson Quartet & John Santos @ Silo's Napa | Review by Matt Collar: “Trumpeter Erik Jekabson and his quartet performing live along with percussionist John Santos... Both Jekabson and Santos (who received a Grammy nomination in the Best Traditional World Music category for his 2009 album La Guerra No) are highly respected educators and working musicians based in the Bay Area. Together, they make engaging, sophisticated jazz that touches upon post-bop, experimental modal music, and Latin jazz. Jekabson’s compositions include the modal “Occupy,” the Afro-jazz-inspired “Like Kenny,” Monk’s “Rhythm-A-Ning” and Sonny Rollins’ “Pent-Up House.” This is adventurous, organic music performed in front of a warmly receptive audience by a band that never fails to swing.”

The Milk Carton Kids @ Napa City Winery **SOLD OUT** | Flat-picking harmony duo The Milk Carton Kids have emerged in the last three years as a powerful voice defining the continuing folk tradition. A refreshing alternative to the foot-stomping grandeur of the so-called "folk revival", an understated virtuosity defines The Milk Carton Kids to the delight of traditionalists and newcomers to the folk movement alike. Indeed, Garrison Keillor has called them "absolute geniuses in close harmony", while cultural purveyors like T Bone Burnett and Billy Bragg continue to refer the importance of The Milk Carton Kids among a group of new folk bands expanding and contradicting the rich tradition that comes before them.

The Los Angeles Times lauds their latest Anti- Records release "The Ash & Clay" as displaying "absolute mastery of their craft" while Paste Magazine emphasizes the "intellectual sophistication of their songs making The Milk Carton Kids an option for purists unsatisfied with some of the pop tendencies seeping in to the genre." Beyond their inventive guitar lines and intricately interwoven vocals, the road-addicted duo is celebrated for the wry and biting humor that has become a beloved mainstay of their shows, with Fretboard Journal declaring, "The Milk Carton Kids are funny. Seriously funny. And what is only hinted at on their albums and within some of the lyrics is on full display during their live performances."

Wednesday Night Ramble: Jimmy Smith CD Release Party @ Historic Empress Theatre | The North Bay All-Stars host a CD Release Party for one of our great Vallejo Blues artists, Jimmy Smith Band his band. Don’t miss this edition of the Wednesday Night Ramble and grab a copy of the new CD “Cold Sweat” The All-Stars are Don Bassey on bass and vocals, Mike Emerson on keyboards, T Moran on drums, Kevin Frazier on sax and vocals, and Matt Silva on guitar.

A life of music. Starting at the age of 5 Jimmy met what would become his lifelong passion, the 88 keys of the piano. With little patience for lessons, he learned to play by listening to the radio. It was the 50’s and rock was stretching its legs as was Jimmy. Formal music at school and all manner of music at home, the garage was the stage in those days.

Bands with names like the Jaguars and the Viscounts fostered a love of performing. And then it happened— the Hammond organ rose up and it was love at first listen. There were many more bands and lots of different styles of music.

Over the years Jimmy’s keyboards have partnered with a diverse group of musicians and bands. Doyle Bramhall III, Steve Kimock, Luther Tucker, Charlie Musslewhite, Nick Gravenites, Norton Buffalo, Larry Graham, Robert Palmer, Guitar Shorty, Little Jimmy Reed, Kenny Neal, Freddie Roulette, Sonny Rhodes, and Tia Carroll to name a few. Jimmy's bands have opened for such greats as Bonnie Raitt, Tower of Power, Little Feat, and the Average White Band. Now, all those years of music combine to bring the Jimmy Smith Band to center stage.

Josh Rouse w/ Doug Paisley @ Napa City Winery | “Songwriting for me is something I have to do to stay on the sunny side of life. It’s my therapy. I pick up a guitar from time to time and it spills out. I feel lucky in that, after years of being blessed by their presence, the song spirits are still moving through me”

It may have been 15+ years – from roots in rural Nebraska, through time in ‘Music City’ Nashville, TN, and to the current day relocated to a new home in cosmopolitan Spain – but it seems that the song spirits have been constant companions for Josh Rouse. And maybe no more so than on the singer-songwriter’s latest record, The Happiness Waltz, an album that marries both his past, and present – revisting an earlier era, where his music was heavily influenced by the ‘soft rock’ of the 70’s, and combining it with lyrical tales drawn from the here and now – his modern day-to-day life, one deeply enriched by his children and family.

Rouse has been lauded for his special talents – creating little slices of heaven with words and music that have captured the hearts and minds of both critics, and fans, the globe over. Over a storied career, from the engaging debut Dressed Like Nebraska, through his ‘golden era’ with 1972 and Nashville, and right down to the 2011 latin-bossa nova-tinged release …and the Long Vacations, Rouse has created a series of unique, and distinctive records, filled with sparkling melodies and enchanting lyrics.

Maria Muldaur @ Napa City Winery | Maria Muldaur is best known world-wide for her 1974 mega-hit “Midnight at the Oasis,” which received several Grammy nominations, and enshrined her forever in the hearts of Baby Boomers everywhere; but despite her considerable pop music success, her 50-year career could best be described a long and adventurous odyssey through the various forms of American Roots Music. During the folk revival of the early '60s, she began exploring and singing early Blues, Bluegrass and Appalachian “Old Timey” Music, beginning her recording career in 1963 with the Even Dozen Jug Band and shortly thereafter, joining the very popular Jim Kweskin Jug Band, touring and recording with them throughout the '60s.

In the 40 years since “Midnight at the Oasis,” Maria has toured extensively worldwide and has recorded 40 solo albums covering all kinds of American Roots Music, including Gospel, R&B, Jazz and Big Band (not to mention several award-winning children’s albums), before settling comfortably into her favorite idiom, the Blues, in recent years. Often joining forces with some of the top names in the business, Maria has recorded and produced on-average an album per year, several of which have been nominated for Grammy and other awards. Her critically acclaimed 2001 Stony Plain Records release, Richland Woman Blues, was nominated for a Grammy and by the Blues Foundation as Best Traditional Blues Album of the Year, as was the follow up to that album, Sweet Lovin’ Ol’ Soul. Her timely 2008 album, Yes We Can!, featured songs from some of the most socially conscious songwriters of the past half century: Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, Allen Toussaint, Garth Brooks and others, and featured her “Women’s Voices for Peace Choir,” which included: Bonnie Raitt, Joan, Baez, Jane Fonda, Odetta, Phoebe Snow, Holly Near and others.

For her 2009 release, Maria revisited her original Jug Band roots, teaming up with John Sebastian, David Grisman and Dan Hicks. Maria Muldaur & Her Garden of Joy garnered Maria her 6th Grammy nomination, and was also nominated for Best Traditional Blues Album of the Year by The Blues Foundation.

In 2011, detouring from her ongoing exploration of acoustic Vintage Blues, Maria released Steady Love, returning to her much-beloved New Orleans (the place she calls her “musical and spiritual home”) to record a contemporary electric Blues album that reflects the kind of music she loves to perform live - what she calls “Bluesiana Music” - her own brand of New Orleans-flavored Blues, R&B and “Swamp Funk.” Steady Love reached #1 on the Living Blues Chart, and garnered her another nomination for Best Traditional Female Blues Artist from the Blues Foundation.

In 2012, for her 40th album, Maria produced ….First Came Memphis Minnie, a loving tribute to the pioneering Blues woman who inspired and influenced so many female Blues artists who followed in her footsteps, many of whom joined Maria on this special project: Bonnie Raitt, Phoebe Snow, Ruthie Foster, Koko Taylor and Rory Block accompanied by the amazing guitar work of Del Rey, David Bromberg, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Roy Rogers, Bob Margolin, Steve James and Steve Freund. Maria considers Memphis Minnie to be a trailblazing musical pioneer for all women, but also a personal Blues hero. “From that first moment I heard her soulful music on an old scratchy 78 to this,” says Maria, “Memphis Minnie, and the example she set for me, has remained a profound influence on my life and my music.” In 2013, taking a brief hiatus from her yearly recording schedule, Maria is focusing on 3 special collaborations. First, she will be performing worldwide with her old Jug Band mates, in a series of 50th Anniversary Kweskin Jug Band Reunion concerts. Next, she will be teaming up with the Campbell Brothers, world-renowned Sacred Steel Gospel artists, for a very special show entitled, “Spirit & The Blues”, an especially high-spirited and electrifying style of traditional African-American Gospel music. And finally, this Fall, Maria will be touring as Special Guest Artist with Bill Wyman and The Rhythm Kings. In between these 3 special collaborations, she will continue to perform with her own Red Hot Bluesiana Band.

Hot House Blues! Frank Bey + Anthony Paule Band @ Historic Empress Theatre | Storied Blues veteran Frank Bey joins guitar master Anthony Paule return for another very special Hot House Blues session with a world-class band and acclaimed new CD. Their last show at the Empress was epic! Don’t miss this one!

Since first touring together in 2005, Philadelphia based singer Frank Bey, and San Franciscan guitarist Anthony Paule, have blended their talents and expertise to captivate audiences up and down the West Coast.

Born and raised in Millen, Georgia, Frank Bey began his singing career performing gospel at the tender age of 4. Along with his brother and two cousins, their group “The Rising Sons” toured around The South making live appearances as well as radio broadcasts. At age 17 he joined the Otis Redding Revue working as the opening act for several years. During his time with Otis Redding, Frank learned to captivate and mesmerize an audience with a song. After a long hiatus from the music business during the 80s and early 90s, Frank came back better than ever.

Anthony Paule has been a driving force of the Bay Area music scene for many years and has previously released two solo CDs. In addition to fronting is own band, he’s toured and recorded with Boz Scaggs, Charlie Musselwhite, Bo Diddley, Maria Muldaur, Barbara Lynn, Norton Buffalo, The Johnny Nocturne Band, Mark Hummel, and others. The release of the two CDs with Frank Bey, “You Don’t Know Nothing” and “Soul For Your Blues” finds Paule in his element, in full stride with this eight piece soul band... backing up a fine singer.

“Thanks for the CD. I really enjoyed the album (Soul For Your Blues); good songs, good production. I liked some of the writing quite a bit…my faves were I’m Leaving You, I Just Can’t Go On and Somebody Else’s Baby. Frank is a terrific singer with a lot of variety and range and real feeling. I was surprised by the John Prine song; I paid more attention to the story in Frank’s version than I did with the original. There’s a lot to be proud of here. Thanks for sending a copy.”
Bruce Iglauer – President, Alligator Records

"Bey’s vocice is one of the small wonders of modern soul-blues...He’s found his dream band in seven Bay Area musicians led by tasteful intelligent guitarist and producer Anthony Paule.”
Frank-John Hadley, Downbeat Magazine, January 2014

"Frank Bey had been standing in the shadows of stardom far too long. He has finally stepped out of the shadows.”
Lee Hildebrand – Music Journalist

“In a time when American Idol-type vocal gymnastics too often pass for soul, Frank Bey is a perfect reminder of what soul singing is really all about: Communication, warmth, and emotional sincerity.”
Rick Estrin of the Nightcats – Alligator Records Recording Artist

LEVI LLOYD on Guitar & Vocals is a blues veteran. He's played with B. B. King, John Lee Hooker and toured worldwide as the longtime guitarist for the legendary Joe Louis Walker. Levi's well-worn '68 Les Paul guitar and lowdown vocals tell it all.

Also playing is INVISIBLE MONSTERS, a powerful rock band from the Bay Area, combining a powerful rock structure with smooth melodic overtones. A treat for fans of Brand New, Say Anything, Coheed and Cambria, and Taking Back Sunday.

AMBER SNIDER is a local favorite folk, rock, country & blues singer-songwriter whose music has been compared to artists as varied as Jewel, Rickie Lee Jones, Natalie Merchant, Sheryl Crow, Stevie Nicks and Melissa Etheridge. Amber is influenced by traditional blues, sixties and seventies classic rock, vintage country as well as contemporary indie music. Her music has playfully been coined "Amber-icana” named after the popular genre “Americana”. She has been a regular Napa Valley performer since 2000 with numerous appearances on KVYN, Napa TV and Best of The Bay. The Bangles @ Napa City Winery | It was 30 years ago that guitarists Susanna Hoffs and Vicki Peterson and drummer Debbi Peterson formed the Bangles in a Brentwood, California, garage. They did so based on two crucial elements: their common love for rock’s golden age (“Growing up loving the same music has always been the glue for the Bangles,” says Susanna) and the crystalline sound they quite naturally created when they blended their voices (“The chemistry was there instantaneously. It just clicked,” Debbi recalls). These intertwined epiphanies sent them off together on a long and winding road that continues to this special moment: the appearance of Sweetheart of the Sun, an album filled with a fresh batch of definitive Bangles songs—and it appears that there’s still no end in sight.

Recorded by Matthew Sweet (Susanna’s frequent collaborator) at his home studio in the Hollywood Hills, with much of the overdubbing done at the home studios of Vicki and Susanna, and mixed by Jim Scott (Tom Petty, Wilco), Sweetheart of the Sun reveals The Bangles at their equally beguiling extremes, as soaring folk-rock harmonies coexist with adrenalized rave-ups inspired by the band’s roots in Nuggets-era garage rock. The latter move is made overt by the two covers: a wild and woolly recapturing of the obscure British Invasion treasure “Sweet and Tender Romance” by Scotland’s McKinley Sisters, on which Vicki thrillingly channels Jimmy Page, who played the guitar solo on the original, and a blistering take on Todd Rundgren’s Nazz classic “Open My Eyes,” which they’ve been playing live since the mid-’80s.

Dwight Yoakam @ Uptown Theatre Napa | Few entertainers have attained the iconic status of Dwight Yoakam. Perhaps that is because so few have consistently and repeatedly met the high standard of excellence delivered by the Kentucky native no matter what his endeavor. His name immediately conjures up compelling, provocative images: A pale cowboy hat with the brim pulled low; poured-on blue jeans; intricate, catchy melodies paired with poignant, brilliant lyrics that mesmerize with their indelible imprint. Then there’s Yoakam the actor, who seemingly melts into his roles, impressively standing toe-to-toe with some of the world’s top thespians: Jodie Foster, Tommy Lee Jones, Forest Whitaker, Nicholas Cage. Add to that Yoakam the entrepreneur and you have a singular talent without peer.

Is it any wonder that Time Magazine dubbed Yoakam “A Renaissance Man,” or why Don McLeese dubs him “the musician who has established himself as a visionary beyond time” and “an artist who could title an album Tomorrow’s Sounds Today and deliver it?" But that’s getting ahead of the story.

Much has been made that the Kentucky-born, Ohio-raised Yoakam was too country for Nashville when he first sought out his musical fortune in the mid-80s, but the truth is his music has always been too unique, too ruggedly individualistic to fit neatly into any one box. Like the icons he so admires --Elvis, Merle, Buck-- Yoakam is one of a kind. He has taken his influences and filtered them into his own potent blend of country and rock that honors his forbearers and yet creates something beautifully new. As Vanity Fair declared, “Yoakam strides the divide between rock’s lust and country’s lament.”

The long-time Los Angeleno has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide, placing him in an elite cadre of global superstars. Yet the sales have never come at the expense of his musical integrity. Whether singing about the twisted wreckage of romance or broken dreams of this hard life, Yoakam brings a knowing, glorious edge to his delivery and stands, in a world of artifice and flash, as a beacon of authenticity. He has 12 gold albums and 9 platinum or multi-platinum albums, including the triple platinum “This Time”. Five of those albums have topped Billboard’s Country Albums chart with another fourteen landing in the Top 10. More than 30 singles have charted, with twenty-two going top 20, including the incomparable hits “Honky Tonk Man,” “Please Please Baby,” “Little Ways,” “I Sang Dixie,” “It Only Hurts When I Cry,” “Fast as You” and “Thousand Miles from Nowhere.” He’s won two Grammys and earned a staggering 21 nominations.

So broad is his appeal that he was the only artist in 2008 to appear at both indie rock extravaganza Coachella and at country music festival Stagecoach. His performances, as always, drew rapturous acclaim from critics: “I haven’t yet encountered another devoted love fest like the one Yoakam got this weekend,” wrote August Brown in the Los Angeles Times this spring. “Every alt-kid, rockabilly survivor, Latina hot-rodder and the rest of Stagecoach’s misfits all came under this tent to pay rowdy respect to a singer-songwriter who’s done as much as any to keep the fangs in modern pop-inclined country.” In fact, Don McLeese proclaims that Yoakam has been “defying the label ‘too country for rock, too rock for country’” for decades.

The potency of his performances makes him a much in-demand guest on the television circuit. So much so that he holds the record for the most performances by any musical artist on the top-ranked “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”.

At the core of Yoakam’s creative expression, whether it is musical, theatrical or entrepreneurial, is an unwavering desire to articulate human connection. The thread that ties it all together continues to be Yoakam himself, and his devotion to discovery. But we’ll let Yoakam have the final word. As he told Newsweek, “I’m committed to an earnest exploration of life, no matter what medium I’m using.”

Annie Rue & Friends @ Silo's Napa | Annie loves two things the most- draw and sing. She has been writing and playing music since she picked up the guitar her dad gave her when she was 9 at 22 in her college apartment. She wrote several songs for a while before recording her first full length album with Gary Medieros at Saddletree Studios in October 2011. Since then she’s released an EP, called “The Runaway”, toured the Southern U.S., and is currently working on writer songs for her second album.

When she’s is not recording and writing, Annie is illustrating. She has worked on several children’s books, and currently workes as an in-house artist for a company in the Bay Area.

John Pizzarelli @ Napa City Winery | John Pizzarelli, the world-renowned jazz guitarist and singer, was called “Hip with a wink” by Town & Country, “madly creative” by the Los Angeles Times and “the genial genius of the guitar” by The Toronto Star.

After his recent smash success with the Boston Pops, he was hailed by the Boston Globe for “reinvigorating the Great American Songbook and re-popularizing jazz.” And the Seattle Times called him “a tour de force” and “a rare entertainer of the old school.” Before a recent show in the northwest, the local paper quipped “John Pizzarelli is so impossibly cool, he shouldn’t be legally allowed to enter Oregon.”

Using performers like Nat “King” Cole, Frank Sinatra and Joao Gilberto and the songs of composers from Richard Rodgers, George Gershwin to James Taylor, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Lennon & McCartney as touchstones, John Pizzarelli has established himself as one of the prime interpreters of the Great American Songbook and beyond, bringing to his work the cool jazz flavor of his brilliant guitar playing and singing.

Carolina Chocolate Drops + The Honeycutters **SOLD OUT** @ City Winery Napa | In early 2012, Grammy award-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops released their studio album Leaving Eden (Nonesuch Records) produced by Buddy Miller. The traditional African-American string band's album was recorded in Nashville and featured founding members Rhiannon Giddens and Dom Flemons, along with multi-instrumentalist Hubby Jenkins and cellist Leyla McCalla, already a familiar presence at the group's live shows. With Flemons and McCalla now concentrating on solo work, the group's 2014 lineup will feature two more virtuosic players alongside Giddens and Jenkins - cellist Malcolm Parson and multi-instrumentalist Rowan Corbett -- illustrating the expansive, continually exploratory nature of the Chocolate Drops' music. Expect a new disc from this quartet in 2015. The Chocolate Drops got their start in 2005 with Giddens, Flemons and fiddle player Justin Robinson, who amicably left the group in 2011. The Durham, North Carolina-based trio would travel every Thursday night to the home of old-time fiddler and songster Joe Thompson to learn tunes, listen to stories and, most importantly, to jam. Joe was in his 80s, a black fiddler with a short bowing style that he inherited from generations of family musicians. Now he was passing those same lessons onto a new generation. When the three students decided to form a band, they didn’t have big plans. It was mostly a tribute to Joe, a chance to bring his music back out of the house again and into dancehalls and public places. With their 2010 Nonesuch debut, Genuine Negro Jig—which garnered a Best Traditional Folk Album Grammy—the Carolina Chocolate Drops proved that the old-time, fiddle and banjo-based music they’d so scrupulously researched and passionately performed could be a living, breathing, ever-evolving sound. Starting with material culled from the Piedmont region of the Carolinas, they sought to freshly interpret this work, not merely recreate it, highlighting the central role African-Americans played in shaping our nation’s popular music from its beginnings more than a century ago. The virtuosic trio’s approach was provocative and revelatory. Their concerts, The New York Times declared, were “an end-to-end display of excellence... They dip into styles of southern black music from the 1920s and ’30s—string- band music, jug-band music, fife and drum, early jazz—and beam their curiosity outward. They make short work of their instructive mission and spend their energy on things that require it: flatfoot dancing, jug playing, shouting.” Rolling Stone Magazine described the Carolina Chocolate Drops’ style as “dirt-floor-dance electricity.” If you ask the band, that is what matters most. Yes, banjos and black string musicians first got here on slave ships, but now this is everyone’s music. It’s okay to mix it up and go where the spirit moves.

Celebrate The 4th: REVOLVER @ Silo's Napa | Come Celebrate The 4th on the Patio of The Napa River Inn with REVOLVER!

Spend the 4th of July at The Historic Napa Mill, located directly across the Napa River from the Fireworks...The BEST VIEW in all of Napa!

Al Stewart @ City Winery Napa | Folk-rock’s master of time and place returns with 13 new songs for a new century!

For a singer and songwriter whose work is suffused with history and detail, Al Stewart follows no creative timetable. It’s been 10 years since his last US CD of new material, almost 30 years since his “Year of the Cat” single and album became unforgettable international hits, almost 40 years since his first album was released. Al Stewart is not afraid of time and its passages.

A Beach Full of Shells, Al’s Appleseed debut and first new US release since 1995’s Between the Wars, finds Stewart in timeless form, presenting a baker’s dozen new songs that span centuries and continents, autobiography and fiction. As he nears the 20-album mark, Stewart remains a distinctively literate and vivid storyteller, time-traveling and teleporting himself and his listeners from World War I battlefields to Sixties bedrooms, from ships to airplanes to ice floes, from the specific to the mysterious.

Musical settings that encompass electric folk-rock and acoustic ballads, colorful dabs of classical and Eastern music, and even a touch of Little Richard-style piano pounding, are as varied and imaginative as Al’s subject matters. The CD’s producer, Laurence Juber, formerly of Paul McCartney’s Wings, has enhanced Al’s elegant Scottish drawl, nimble acoustic guitar-work and keyboards with his own Grammy-winning guitar playing, string arrangements and percussion and a flexible rhythm section.

NVOH Presents: BILL FRISELL'S Guitar In The Space Age @ City Winery Napa | BILL FRISELL's GUITAR IN THE SPACE AGE featuring Greg Leisz, Tony Scherr and Kenny Wollesen!

Always on the lookout for opportunities to "dig around for where I'm coming from," Bill Frisell presents an homage to the instrumental popular music made "right at the birth of the Fender Telecaster guitar" that, he recalls, "got me super fired up" about his instrument of choice. Frisell is joined by fellow guitar master Greg Leisz on electric and pedal steel guitars, and his trio partners Tony Scherr on bass and Kenny Wollesen on drums. Together they will be exploring music of the electric guitar in the space age inspired by artists such as Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant, Charlie Christian, Merle Travis, Link Wray, Duane Eddy, Chet Atkins, Chuck Berry, Dick Dale, The Ventures, The Astronauts, The Wrecking Crew, The Beach Boys and more. As on all Frisell projects, the proceedings will be, he understates, "rich with possibility."

Consummate guitarist, composer and musical interpreter Bill Frisell has assembled a trusted ensemble consisting of Tony Scherr (bass), Greg Leisz (guitars) and Kenny Wollesen (drums) to perform his take on the classic songs of John Lennon. Titled “ALL WE ARE SAYING,” the project has long been in the works—one could go as far back as the first time he heard the Beatles at the age of 13. Fast forward a few decades and Frisell is asked to put together an impromptu set in honor of John Lennon as part of a special event in Paris. The preparation, performances and reception to these compositions was an inspiration nurtured to fruition with this project.

Described by the Wall Street Journal as “the most innovative and influential jazz guitarist of the past 25 years” Frisell’s artistry has earned across the board praise for his instinctual musicianship—working both within and beyond the parameters of jazz music as he effortlessly incorporates elements of Americana, world, blues, classical, creating a rich and unique aural tapestry.

Says Frisell: “John Lennon's music has been with me, the band, everybody, the world...seems like forever. The songs are part of us. In our blood. There was nothing we really needed to do to prepare for this. We've been preparing our whole lives. The songs are there. All we had to do was play them. Everyone involved with this has their own personal, deep, long, relationship to John Lennon's music. It connects us all and brings us together. I feel blessed having the chance to play this music with these people”.

Richard Thompson ALL REQUEST SHOW + MEET & GREET @ City Winery Napa |

“The Finest rock songwriter after Dylan and the best electric guitarist since Hendrix.” — LA Times

“A folksinger who (shreds) like an arena-rock star… and still writes songs that sting and storm.” – NPR

Named by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the Top 20 Guitarists of All Time, Richard Thompson is also one of the world’s most critically acclaimed and prolific songwriters. He has received Lifetime Achievement Awards for Songwriting on both sides of the Atlantic- from the Americanas in Nashville to Britain’s BBC Awards, and the prestigious Ivor Novellos. In 2011 Thompson was the recipient of the OBE (Order of the British Empire) personally bestowed upon him by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. Most recently he was nominated for “Artist of the Year” by the Americana Music Honors & Awards.

Having co-founded the groundbreaking group Fairport Convention as a teenager in the 60’s, Richard Thompson and his mates virtually invented British Folk Rock. By the age of 21 he left the band to pursue his own career, followed by a decade long musical partnership with his then-wife Linda, to over 30 years as a highly successful solo artist.

A wide range of musicians have recorded Thompson’s music including Robert Plant, Elvis Costello, REM, Del McCoury, Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos, David Byrne, Don Henley and many others.

Thompson’s massive body of work includes over 40 albums, many Grammy nominations, as well as numerous soundtracks, including Werner Herzog’s Grizzly Man. His most recent CD, Electric, was produced by the great Nashville musician Buddy Miller (Band of Joy, Patty Griffin.). Electric continues to receive positive praise with Rolling Stone declaring, “…the excellence is undeniable.”

This year saw Richard Thompson headlining dates around the world as well as co-headlining shows with Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell. Thompson and his band joined the Americanarama Tour sharing the stage with Bob Dylan, Wilco, and My Morning Jacket culminating with Dylan himself covering RT’s classic song “’1952 Vincent Black Lightning”.

Thompson’s genre defying mastery of both acoustic and electric guitar along with dizzying energy and onstage wit continue to earn Richard Thompson massive new fans and a place as one of the most distinctive virtuosos in folk rock history.

“Genius appears early. Legends are earned. But history’s greatest never stand on their laurels. This is the artistic arc for Richard Thompson!”

Lewis was born in Washington D.C. and raised in Silver Spring, MD. Colicky as a baby, it seems he was destined to be angry and easily irritated. In 1996, his friend Lizz Winstead tapped him to create a weekly segment for a show she was producing on Comedy Central called The Daily Show. The segment, a three minute rant about whatever was bothering him at the moment, evolved into Back in Black. It became one of the most popular and longest running segments on the show and also created a long and successful relationship with the network. Since then, Lewis has taped four specials for the Comedy Central Presents series, co-created Last Laugh with Lewis Black, presided over Lewis Black’s The Root of All Evil, and continues to perform Back in Black on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. His popular appearances on Comedy Central helped to win him Best Male Stand-Up at the American Comedy Awards in 2001. He has been nominated for an Emmy and a Grammy. Lou Gramm – The Voice of Foreigner @ Uptown Theatre Napa | Lou Gramm is an American rock vocalist and songwriter best known for being the original lead vocalist for Foreigner. Lou co-wrote many of the songs for Foreigner and went on to have a successful solo career as well. Gramm was the vocalist for many top-40 hits including “Cold as Ice”, “Waiting for a Girl Like You”, “I Want to Know What Love Is”, “I Don’t Want to Live Without You” and his solo hit “Midnight Blue”.

Gramm was born in Rochester, New York, and began his musical career in his mid-teens, playing in local Rochester bands. He later became front man for the band Black Sheep. Black Sheep had the distinction of being the first American band signed to the Chrysalis label, which released their first single, “Stick Around” in 1973. They were the opening act for KISS when an icy accident with their equipment truck on the New York State Thruway suddenly ended the band’s tour on Christmas Eve, 1975. Unable to support its albums with live performances, Black Sheep came prematurely to a screeching halt.

A year earlier, Lou Gramm had the opportunity to meet his future bandmate Mick Jones. Jones was in search of a lead vocalist for a new band he was assembling and invited Gramm to audition for the job of lead singer. With the blessings of his Black Sheep bandmates, Gramm flew down to New York to audition for the still-unnamed band. With his powerful vocals, Lou easily got the Job with the band initially known as “Trigger,” and later renamed to Foreigner. Lou Gramm became one of the most successful rock vocalists of the late 1970s and 1980s. Circus magazine in 1978 upon release of “Hot Blooded” commented that Lou Gramm had a voice that Robert Plant might envy. His unique vocals have made Foreigner one of Billboard’s Top 100 Artists of All Time in hit songs history.

Gramm was the lead vocalist on all of Foreigner’s hit songs, including “Feels Like the First Time”, “Cold as Ice”, “Long, Long Way from Home”, “Hot Blooded”, “Double Vision”, “Blue Morning, Blue Day”, “Head Games”, “Dirty White Boy”, “Urgent”, “Juke Box Hero”, “Break It Up” and “Say You Will”. He co-wrote most of the songs for the band, which achieved two of its biggest hits with the ballads “Waiting for a Girl Like You”, which spent ten weeks at #2 on the American Hot 100, and “I Want to Know What Love Is”, which was a #1 hit internationally in 1985. Their first 8 singles cracked the Billboard Top 20, making them the first group since the Beatles to achieve this in 1980.

By 1987, Foreigner was struggling with ongoing internal conflicts. During this period, Gramm released his first solo album, Ready or Not, which received critical acclaim and contained a top five hit single with “Midnight Blue”. This was followed by the 1987 Foreigner album Inside Information, which reached number 15 on Billboard’s album chart. The extracted “Say You Will” was released late that year, and “I Don’t Want to Live Without You” followed.

Gramm left Foreigner for good and has been touring the U.S., Canada, and Mexico steadily since January 2004. As of 2013, Lou Gramm continues to tour with his band performing many of his old Foreigner hits. In May 2013, Triumph Books released Gramm’s autobiography Juke Box Hero: My Five Decades in Rock ‘n’ Roll. On June 13, 2013, Gramm, along with Foreigner bandmate Mick Jones, were inducted in to the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame where the two performed “Juke Box Hero” and “I Want to Know What Love Is”, marking their first performance together in nearly a decade.

Although Uptown Theatre has hosted Foreigner before, this is the first time Lou Gramm has performed at Uptown. Lou will be bringing his signature vocals along with the classic hits of Foreigner making for a powerful combination and exciting show.

With a hugely expressive voice and an arsenal of powerful songs, Martha Wainwright is a beguiling entertainer and a refreshingly different, new force in music.

Martha is the daughter of folk legends Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle and sister of acclaimed singer songwriter Rufus Wainwright. Born in New York City and raised in Montreal, she spent her childhood immersed in music and often performing with her parents. She took the first step in her own recording career in 1998 when she contributed her song "Year of the Dragon" to her mother and aunt's album "The McGarrigle Hour." The same year she started singing back-up for her brother both live and on record.

Martha released a self-titled EP as well as a four-song EP called "Factory" in 2002. In February 2005 Wainwright released an EP called "Bloody Motherfu*king As*hole," followed by the eponymous "Martha Wainwright" in April to great critical and commercial acclaim. In the January 2005 issue of Mojo, Norah Jones listed her as one of the "best things she heard all year." London's Sunday Times included "Bloody Mother Fu*king As*hole" in their songs of the year and Rolling Stone called "BMFA" "a blistering prelude to her debut album." Throughout her career, Martha has also contributed to albums by Dan Bern, Kate & Anna McGarrigle. Rufus Wainwright, Snow Patrol and Teddy Thompson among others. A dynamic performer, Martha was a part of the acclaimed Leonard Cohen tribute concert in May 2004 at Brighton's Dome Concert Hall. Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes @ Uptown Theatre | On the eve of the release of his third solo album, Rich Robinson, best known as the guitarist, songwriter, and founder of The Black Crowes, stands ready to complete the solo artist evolution that he began ten years earlier. The Ceaseless Sight, due out in June 2014, is an album that represents the full maturation of Rich as a songwriter, a vocalist, and a solo artist.

Robinson was born in 1969 and formed the The Black Crowes with his older brother Chris in Atlanta in the 1980’s. At the age of 17, Robinson began writing the music for the songs that would land on the band’s1990 debut album, Shake Your Money Maker, which sold 7 million copies. Over the next 10 years, Rich’s songwriting evolved into the musical engine that powered the band to sales of more than 25 million albums. Before taking a hiatus in 2001, the Crowes catalog included classics like The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, Amorica, By Your Side, and Live at the Greek: Excess All Areas, a double album that captured the teaming of Jimmy Page and The Black Crowes for performances of Led Zeppelin, Crowes and blues and rock standards.

The Crowes went on hiatus in 2001 and in 2004 Rich began his solo journey with the release of his first album, Paper. The record was largely an extension of Rich’s musicianship as a Black Crowe showcasing his stellar and under-rated guitar playing and, for the first time, Rich took on the role of lyricist and lead vocalist. Paste Magazine: “Rich Robinson brings back not only roots-rock accessibility, but the complexity and originality that transformed the Black Crowes into a band that mattered. Paper is filled with beautiful melodies and harmonies, creative guitar work, fitting instrumentation and, most of all, excellent songwriting.”

It would be seven years before his second solo album, Through A Crooked Sun, and an accompanying EP, Llama Blues, were released as the Crowes reunited in 2005 and were actively recording and touring until their second hiatus in 2010. Crooked Sun, a far more personal album than his first, was a collection of 12 songs that expressed the increasing spiritual and political awareness that Rich’s life had taken. Recorded in Woodstock in 2011, the album featured Joe Magistro, Steve Molitz and guest performances by Warren Haynes, Larry Campbell, Karl Berger, John Lindberg, and John Medeski. PopMatters: “A solo artist worth taking seriously…It’s why this is such a significant solo album—even at their most melodic, the Crowes are simply too brash and energetic to ever be this delicate. By stepping out of the Crowes’ comfort zone, Robinson proves that he’s more than a gifted instrumentalist. Robinson has developed a writing style that is indeed reminiscent of the Crowes but also encompasses levels of emotional intricacy that the Crowes, for all their power, are sometimes incapable of reaching.”

A worldwide Black Crowes tour kept Robinson busy in 2013, but he found the time to return to Woodstock to record The Ceaseless Sight. The album finds Robinson stepping solidly into his own as a solo artist as he adds confident vocalist and lyricist to his accomplished musical resume. The Ceaseless Sight will be released on June 3rd 2014.

Kenny Loggins with Special Guest Blue Sky Riders @ Uptown Theatre | Kenny Loggins’ remarkable four-decade-plus career has brought him from the top of the charts to the toast of the Grammys. He’s had smash hits on Hollywood’s favorite soundtracks, rocked worldwide stages, and found his way into children’s hearts while bringing his soulful, beautiful voice to platinum albums of a stunning variety of genres. Kenny Loggins is returning to Uptown Theatre on Sunday July 20th for a repeat performance. Special guest, Blue Sky Riders (Loggins, Georgia Middleman, Gary Burr), will be opening the show, so be sure to come early! Performing such favorites as ‘Celebrate Me Home,’ ‘This Is It,’ ‘Whenever I Call You Friend,’ and‘Danny’s Song,’ along with Blue Sky Riders performing songs from their 2013 self-released album, Finally Home, this show will blend your favorite hits from the past with the new country rock sounds that are inspiring Kenny today.

Loggins, who was born in Everett, Washington, and moved to the Los Angeles area as a young child, began singing and playing guitar in high school, and scored a job as a songwriter for ABC/Wingate out of college for $100 a week after a brief, unlikely stint as a guitarist for psych-rock band the Electric Prunes. “I went in and sang a bunch of my songs I’d already written, and they signed me right there,” he recalls. One of the first tunes he offered up was the beloved “House at Pooh Corner,” which became one of several Loggins-penned hits the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band recorded for 1970′s Uncle Charlie and His Dog Teddy. “I wrote it during finals as a senior in high school,” he says. “We were coming on graduation, and it reminded me of the last chapter of the book House at Pooh Corner, where Christopher Robin is about to head out and leave Pooh and the Hundred Acre Wood behind. Ironically, I guess I never did.”

Halfway through his three-year gig as a Wingate staffer, Loggins met the man who would help shape the early part of his career: Jim Messina. “I knew that Jimmy had worked with Buffalo Springfield and that was one of my favorite acts of the 60′s,” Loggins says of the producer and onetime Poco member. The two started to work on Loggins’ solo debut with Messina behind the glass, and Kenny fell in love with a track his producer had penned called “Peace of Mind.” Before he knew it, the pair of creative partners had morphed into a duo, and Loggins and Messina was born.

Their first album, Kenny Loggins With Jim Messina Sittin’ In, came out in 1971, featuring Loggins’ own version of “Pooh Corner” and the beautiful ballad “Danny’s Song,” which he’d written when his brother’s wife gave birth to the couple’s first child. “That was the beginning of his family,” Loggins remembers, “and many of those lyrics were taken right from a letter he wrote me.” The prolific recording and touring duo released a studio album every year from 1971 to 1976, wrapping with Native Sons. The time had come for Loggins to cast off on his own.

“When I recorded Celebrate Me Home, I was very excited, I was like an arrow pulled back in a bow. I’d waited 7 years to finally make my solo album,” Loggins says. His 1977 Phil Ramone-produced solo debut went platinum and included “I Believe in Love,” the song he’d written for Barbra Streisand to perform in the film A Star Is Born. The album came out just in time for Loggins to score a gig opening for Fleetwood Mac on the Rumours tour, and he went from playing large rooms to arenas overnight. He struck up a friendship with Stevie Nicks, who generously offered to sing one of his songs. Loggins wrote the perfect tune with his friend, Melissa Manchester - “Whenever I Call You Friend” from his 1978 LP Nightwatch - which he credits as “the moment that launched my solo career.”

The hits just kept on coming. Loggins pulled up for a songwriting session at Michael McDonald’s house and heard the opening melody of “What a Fool Believes” coming out of the door. “He stopped playing after 8 bars, but my imagination kept going. So I like to say we were writing together before we met.” The pair won a Best Song Grammy – Loggins’ first – for the tune in 1979. The following year, the pair picked up a second Grammy for “This Is It,” off Loggins’ third consecutive platinum solo album, Keep the Fire. As the decade progressed, Loggins kept expanding his musical range, impressively exploring new textures of jazz, rock, and pop with ambitious production.

In the 1980s, Loggins also earned a new title: king of the movie soundtrack. Film producer Jon Peters called him in to see a rough cut of Caddyshack, and Loggins provided the cult classic’s smash “I’m Alright.” When a pal asked Loggins to write a few songs for an as-yet-unmade picture called Footloose, he whipped up a No. 1 blockbuster: “I had a little up-tempo thing I’d been messing with that I probably wouldn’t have written if it hadn’t have been for the movie,” Loggins says. He scored a track on Tom Cruise’s Top Gun (“Playing With the Boys”) and performed that movie’s indelible hit “Danger Zone.”

While Loggins continued to record albums that were deeply personal and introspective (from 1985′s Vox Humana to 1988′s Back to Avalon), he also began looking outward, contributing to 1985′s landmark charity single “We Are the World.” “I was fortunate that Michael Jackson and I had become friends, so he invited me join in,” Loggins says. “It was a long night, but there was this very rare sense of community in the room. We all knew what we were there to do.”

Several years later, Loggins – a deeply committed environmentalist with a long history of advocating for the planet and green parenting – wrote a passionate plea for change called “Conviction of the Heart” that appeared on his 1991 album Leap of Faith. The song was so powerful, it caught the ear of Al Gore, who later called it the “unofficial anthem of the environmental movement.”

After a stunning run of solo albums, a Christmas album, and two LPs for children (Return to Pooh Corner and More Songs From Pooh Corner), Loggins reunited with his former partner Jim Messina for the Sittin’ In Again Tour in 2005 (the duo toured again in 2009). Playing live has always been – and remains – a key part of Loggins’ life. “It’s an experience I don’t have anywhere else. It is time-travel,” he explains. “I make a connection with the audience that is special to me and unique in my life.”

BLUE SKY RIDERS
Since 2010, Loggins has also been onstage with the country trio, Blue Sky Riders, which he started with Nashville powerhouse Gary Burr and gifted vocalist and singer/songwriter Georgia Middleman. “When Gary and I sang together, we sounded like brothers. The last time I experienced that kind of blend was with Jimmy Messina in 1971.” They had such a great time writing and recording, Loggins proposed they start a band. “Then we laughed about it and went about our way.” But after a few months Loggins called him back and suggested they find a female voice to form a trio. “I knew the songwriting would be the key for this band, so she had to be strong in both singing and writing.”

The group released its debut album, Finally Home, on its own record label, 3Dream Records, in January 2013 and hit the road. “It’s very much a throwback to the country-rock of my youth, but with the exception of ‘Footloose,’ it rocks harder than most of the stuff I’ve done over the years,” Loggins notes.

Though he’s got 12 platinum albums, a pair of Grammys, and hits on almost all the Billboard charts under his belt, Loggins is far from done. With more Blue Sky Riders tunes and a children’s book in the works, he’s still looking forward to what’s next. “I feel very lucky that this is the way I make my living, and not a lot of people can say that,” Loggins says. “I’ve been lucky that I love what I do and I get to keep doing it.”

Matt Schofield @ City Winery Napa | 6:00 PM DOORS / 8:00 PM START

The Schofield story is exploding internationally; the world is sitting up and taking note. Back from another well-received US tour, Schofield is expanding his borders. The LA Times stated, “In Schofield, the UK has produced the best blues guitarist from any country in decades. Head and shoulders above the herd.” Vintage Guitar magazine said, “The best of his generation’s European blues players. His feel for the music is incredible. His playing is so interesting that latching onto his records will reward any guitarist.”

The new collection finds Schofield on stunning form, well able to justify both his fearsome reputation and also the sense of anticipation around this release. Alongside two choice covers from his musical heroes, the album’s nine original tracks showcase his continued growth as an exciting songwriter within the genre, delivered with impassioned vocals to create a diverse and unique take on the blues.

Matt Schofield was rated in the top ten British blues guitarists of all time by Guitar & Bass Magazine alongside such icons as Eric Clapton and Peter Green. His prowess as a blues guitarist has seen him trade licks with iconic guitarists like Buddy Guy and Robben Ford; and brought him high praise in the ‘Penguin Book of Blues Recordings’ as one of only two living British artists to gain a maximum four-star rating.

Nuclear Blonde:
Step away from the blonde and nobody gets hurt...Singer/Songwriter Shauna Marshall explodes on stage dishing up searing blues originals with flavors of rock, country, funk and pop. Combining a raucous sense of humor and classic blues inspired original tunes with a cool blend of dance favorites, Nuclearblonde makes each and every show an adventure. Blowing up all around the North Bay and the San Francisco Bay Area, and sharing the stage with Bay Area blues legends such as Steve Freund, Pat Wilder, Willie G and Stan Erhart, Nuclearblonde has opened for blues chart toppers like Tommy Castro, John Lee Hooker Jr. & John Nemeth. A popular act at local wineries, as a trio in quieter settings the haunting vocals connect with an audience, bringing a feeling of intimacy to any gathering.

Jimmy Smith Band:
Shortly after turning 5 years old, Jimmy met what would become his lifelong passion, the 88 keys of the piano. With little patience for lessons, he learned to play by listening to the radio. It was the '50s and rock was stretching its legs along with Jimmy. With formal music at school and all manner of music at home, the garage was the stage in those days.

Bands with names like the Jaguars and the Viscounts fostered a love of performing. And then it happened— the Hammond organ rose up and it was love at first listen. There were many more bands and lots of different styles of music that followed.

Over the years, Jimmy’s keyboards have partnered with a diverse group of musicians and bands, including Doyle Bramhall III, Steve Kimock, Luther Tucker, Charlie Musslewhite, Nick Gravenites, Norton Buffalo, Larry Graham, Robert Palmer, Guitar Shorty, Little Jimmy Reed, Kenny Neal, Freddie Roulette, Sonny Rhodes, and Tia Carroll. Jimmy's bands have opened for such greats as Bonnie Raitt, Tower of Power, Little Feat, and the Average White Band. Now, all those years of music combine to bring the Jimmy Smith Band to center stage.

Chayah Miranda:
As a San Francisco based Christian pop artist, Chayah Miranda (pronounced "kai-yah") has spent much of her life around the gospel music of her church and the jazz influences of her mother and grandmother, both singers. The song in her heart runs through her blood and is the driving force of everything she does. Beginning at a young age, Chayah has shared her love of singing at church, school talent shows, and with the help of her beloved vocal teacher, Sakai, (whom she met after a meeting with the great Narada Michael Walden at the age of 15) at public fairs all over the country.

She began developing her talent at songwriting during high school with the help of Eric Gonzaga, a Bay Area producer whom she was introduced to after a performance at the annual Fiesta Filipina Fair in San Francisco. Together, they spent years developing Chayah’s sound and style while also working together to write songs for other local artists before she continued her musical education at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA.

During her third year at Berklee, Chayah met another student whom she had seen at her church, Boston Temple Seventh-Day Adventist Church, who convinced her to join Bible study sessions on Saturday afternoons. At this point in her life, church was simply something she attended out of familiarity, not because she believed in God's power of healing and love. As she attended these meetings week after week, it became clearer that God was, and always would be, around to see her through her life and to work His miracles in mysterious ways. This understanding became paramount during the next great trial of Chayah Miranda’s life as she explains in her own words:

“Later on that year, I found myself completely sick and bedridden. My whole body was in so much pain, I couldn’t move. I could barely walk to the bathroom in my apartment. I remember lying in my bed and reading this book, “Steps to Christ.”… I wanted so badly for the pain to go away and to be healthy and strong again. I had been in bed sick for about a month and didn’t tell anyone. As I read the book, there was a passage that touched my heart and soul. It said that all I had to do was surrender to God and ask Him to come into my life and heal me… I prayed and asked God to heal me. I felt his presence there right beside me, and I knew that He had heard my prayer and that I was going to be ok… Maybe it was His way of shaking me and waking me up so that I would turn to Him in my pain. It was the best decision I have ever made in my life.“

Chayah’s debut, full-length album “No Other Way” (co-written and produced by Josh Robinson) is available now on iTunes!

After her recovery, Chayah joined a college missionary training program called STRIDE in which she travelled to different campuses all over Boston to offer Bible studies, free meals, and presentations on health. She has since continued to share her faith and has dedicated her life to God and to her music as a vessel for His message of faith, love, and hope for the world.

“I want everyone to know that there is a God in heaven who loves them so much that there is hope no matter what you are going through. All we have to do is open up and give Him a chance to help us, to strengthen us. And when we ask God for His help and guidance, that’s when miracles will happen; that’s when you’ll see your life change for the better.” – Chayah

X (All Original Band Members!) @ City Winery Napa | 6:00 PM DOORS / 8:00 PM START

X - ‘All Original Members - Exene Cervenka, John Doe, Billy Zoom, & DJ Bonebrake’.

Three decades after the inception of X, one thing is clear: X was not only one of the most influential bands to crash out of the punk movement of the late ‘70s, but the band’s music continues to be sonically groundbreaking today. Songs written during the group’s inception are as relevant and inventive today as they were in 1977.

The fact is, no one sounds like X and no one ever will.

The band’s early albums, Los Angeles (1980), produced by Ray Manzarek of the Doors, Wild Gift (1981), and Under the Big Black Sun (1982) explored dark love and an even darker L.A. with the unflinching eye of a Raymond Chandler novel. Doe and Cervenka would marry and later divorce, but they’d always remain soulmates. As they released each ensuing album, More Fun in theNew World(1983) and Ain’t Love Grand (1985), the band continued to grow sonically and politically, fearlessly mixing genres without ever losing its center. As each member went on to explore diverse careers—careers that included acting, art, writing, producing and multiple side projects.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd @ Uptown Theatre | There are few artists whose names are synonymous with one instrument and how it’s played in service to an entire musical genre. Utter the phrase “young blues guitarist” within earshot of anyone with even a cursory knowledge of the modern musical vanguard and the first name they are most likely to respond with will be Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Still barely in his 30s, the Louisiana born songsmith has been selling millions of albums, throwing singles into the Top 10, shining a light on the rich blues of the past and forging ahead with his own modern twist on a classic sound he has embodied since his teens. He met Stevie Ray Vaughn at 7, shared the stage with New Orleans legend Bryan Lee at 13 and as an adult, he continues to create genre- defining blues-infused rock n’ roll.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s “How I Go” not only serves as a strong reminder of the chops that caused Guitar World to place him right behind B.B. King and Eric Clapton on their list of blues guitarists, but it’s the strongest indication yet of his gifted songwriting talent. The album pairs Kenny’s deeply soulful and impassioned takes on classic material like Bessie Smith’s “Backwater Blues,” Albert King’s “Oh, Pretty Woman” and The Beatles “Yer Blues” alongside the strongest writing and co-writing of his career thus far.

Let’s not forget that Kenny co-wrote “Blue on Black” very early on. The song was #1 on the Rock Charts for 17 consecutive weeks. All of the accolades heaped upon his playing are well deserved and well-earned but there is so much more to offer. “At this point, most people who know about me know I can play guitar,” Shepherd says. “As far as my approach to guitar on this record, it’s not about showing people how much I can play. It’s about really choosing the right notes and playing them at the right times so that every note penetrates people, and they feel it inside and it’s not just some fleeting thing that just goes right by them. “I wanted to be conservative, and selective, and tasteful in the solos that I did,” he adds. “I wanted to concentrate on the song as a whole: the vocals, the arrangements, so every instrument that is being played contributes to the song and takes it to a better place.”

The name “Kenny Wayne Shepherd” is absolutely synonymous with “young blues guitarist” but that phrase isn’t the totality of his person. “Blues player is definitely one of the labels I’ve accumulated, because I’m a huge blues fan and I love to play the blues,” he says. “But if you listen to my music, especially over the course of my career, everything that I do is not blues. It’s the foundation of what I do, but my stuff has a lot more of an edge to it. It’s a little more contemporary. And there’s a certain youthfulness to what I do. I started writing and recording music when I was a teenager and that energy has been consistent throughout my career.”

Kenny Wayne Shepherd is very cognizant of the emotional role music can play in the lives of his listeners. He’s in awe of that responsibility and works hard to bring happiness to people with his considerable gifts. With that said, he’s bound and determined to be remembered as a guy who just straight-up kicked a lot of butt. “I get up on stage every night to play my heart out and to try to turn people on their ear, man. I want to bring light into people’s lives with my music. If I can make people feel good for an hour and a half to two hours and forget about whatever might be stressing them out, then I’m doing my job.
